Introduction

Nice little offline event featuring 3 vintage Champagnes, a couple of reds, and a two wonderful German Rieslings

Flight 1 - Champagne Flight (3 Notes)

  • 2000 Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Millésimé 89 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Ligth gold color. Nose doughy, yeast, tight, mineral, subtle fruit, green apple. Palate is mineral, spice, apple, the finish is bready, mineral driven and very dry.

  • 2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Gorgeous column of tight tiny bubbles streaming upward from the center of the flute, spectacular to look at. Sadly though, while this was very good, it was no where near the bottle we raved about 3 months ago. The previous bottle was just on a completely different level (both were from different sources, the most recent from a local shop). The nose has light florals, biscuit, citrus, some earth, minerals. The palate is crisp, with citrus and some tropical fruit, lively, a touch bitter on the finish today.

  • 2000 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier d'Or 94 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Medium gold color. Blend of 80% Chard and 20% PN. The nose starts off with earthiness, then minerals, some wood, perfume, citrus and pear. The palate is full bodied, great depth, fruity with pear, citrus mineral, wood and spices. Nice balance, clean, dry, and a LONG finish. Very complex, very good! Unamimous WOTN .

Flight 2 - Red Flight (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Achával-Ferrer Malbec Finca Mirador 93 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

Purple black, inky color. The nose really stands out with blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry, wet leaves, slightly sweetish plum, violets, and spice. The palate bounces around some though. Initially, I found it very disjointed, over the top spice, oaky, and a bit of heat, but then it settled down over about 20 minutes and integrated nicely. The midpalate on this is great, nice lush fruit, dense on the palate, glycerin, long finish with spice playing over the black and blue fruit. Very interesting wine, this had been decanted for 3 hours and aerated twice. Just a great nose!

  • 2005 Etude Cabernet Sauvignon 87 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Very dark red color. The nose is fair with currants, spice, oak, subtle earth. The palate is disjointed with over the top spice and oak, medium body and a short finish. This was quite disappointing. The 87 was actually generous IMO. I would not buy this at $20, maybe this was not representative for some reason, but no one liked this tonight.

Flight 3 - German Riesling Flight (2 Notes)

Flight 4 - Bonus Dessert Wine (1 Note)

  • 2000 Tokaj Hétszőlő Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos 89 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

Rich medium yellow color. The nose has an interesting and prominent dill pickle note that fades some over time, it is not a negative at all, but quite different, honey, citrus, apricots. The palate has good viscosity, honey, apricot, ciitrus, sweet, good acid and balance. Nice dessert wine.

Closing

The 2000 Vilmart Grand Cuvee d'Or was the unanimous WOTN getting all 8 first place votes. The 2nd WOTN by a hair was the 2004 Achaval Ferrer Finca Mirador. Thanks to John and Erin for hosting and Robert for the bonus Tokaj.
