Introduction

George Molitor from Fine Vines graciously opened around 20 newly released wines from his great Burgundy portfolio (plus a Chave!). I missed a few, but have tasting notes on most.

Flight 1 (19 Notes)

  • 2009 Olivier Bernstein Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Wine tasting. Big ripe fruit. Some interesting spice, but mostly driven by new oak. Moderate length.

  • 2008 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Big fruit on nose, followed by peach and candied apple on palate, then some lemon on finish. Lots of acidity and minerality provide really excellent energy and lift, particularly on the finish. Really classic in style.

  • 2009 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Wine tasting. Ripe fruit on nose and palate, mostly showing peach and apple. Good spice as well. Fleshier, but with less acidity and energy than the 2008 also just tasted. Moderate length. Most likely a very good young drinking white Burgundy.

  • 2009 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Bourgogne 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Wine tasting. Super bargain at around/under $20 release. Wild strawberry on nose with some spice traces. Same fruit on palate, just a bit less robust. Lots of minerality. Still a bit awkward and angular, particularly on finish, but wonderful overall material for its level. I bought a case, will hold onto it for a year before digging in.

  • 2008 Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Wine tasting. Dense red and black fruit on nose with great anise, clove and fresh thyme on nose. Palate a bit less attractive today, showing quite a bit of acidity from middle to end, then also overt oak on finish. All this will likely integrate nicely in a couple of years, leaving great primary fruit in the forefront.

  • 2008 Domaine Bruno Clair Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Wine tasting. Dense mostly black fruit on nose, followed by very ripe red and black fruit on palate. Really meaty spice complementing the fruit. Somewhat backward in the middle, then some big oak coming through for now on finish. I don't plan on opening what I bought for a decade or more.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Wine tasting. Ripe red fruit on nose. Pale fruit comes through on palate, some bitterness coming through on finish.

  • 2009 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Chambolle-Musigny 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Wine tasting. I liked this just as much as when tasted from barrel last year, it's a truly impressive for its level, much like its 2008 counterpart. Really lush fruit coming across in a slightly rustic style. Really impressive spice and textures with great length and finish for a Villages. Tasting alongside the Mugnier 2009 Chambolle-Musigny, which is usually my favorite, and this Hudelot-Noellat gave it a real challenge.

  • 2009 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Wine tasting. Great red fruit on nose and palate. Incredibly elegant and silky smooth for a Villages level wine (ok, it's really half 1er and half Villages). Slightly rich and candied fruit seem to come through only on finish. Amazingly balanced and charming for its level.

  • 2009 Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Wine tasting. Black fruit from beginning to end, with some really exciting meaty spice. Lots of oak on finish, but this will integrate easily in the next few years. Either decant for a few hours or hold until 2014 or later. Super impressive Villages wine, but that's what 2009 is consistently showing.

  • 2009 Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Wine tasting. Dense and intense black fruit on nose and start. Backward and tannic elements coming through in middle and end. Interesting, I strongly preferred this to the Chambolle-Musigny Lavrottes last year from barrel, but now I felt the opposite. But that might just be that 2009 fruit is generally so dense that the effect in Gevrey-Chambertin itself tends to extreme concentration levels.

  • 2009 Olivier Bernstein Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Lavrottes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Wine tasting. Red and black fruit nicely balanced on nose and palate. Great spice gives this an alluring and exciting element. Close to balanced already today. Interesting, I strongly preferred the Gevrey-Chambertin Champeaux to this last year from barrel, but now I felt the opposite. But that might just be that 2009 fruit is generally so dense that the effect in Gevrey-Chambertin itself tends to extreme concentration levels.

  • 2009 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Wine tasting. Black and red fruit on nose and palate. Lots of baking spice, giving this a Vosne-like flavor and feel. Great length, really good textures. Very similar to how it showed from barrel at the Domaine last year.

  • 2009 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Wine tasting. Elegant mostly red fruit on nose with spice in background. Palate shows a balance of more ripe black and red fruit, very nicely balanced and structured. I think I say almost the same thing every year - the newest vintage is the best vintage yet of Mugnier Marechale.

  • 2009 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos Vougeot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Wine tasting. Red and black cherry on nose and palate. Some very sweet spices come through in middle and end. Good acidity, minerality and textures. Long finish.

  • 2009 Olivier Bernstein Clos Vougeot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Wine tasting. Ripe fruit on nose with really big spice collection. Same ripe fruit comes through on palate with lots of concentration and intensity, but this isn't showing the "fruit bomb" character I feared when tasted from barrel last year, when it was the only Bernstein wine that didn't impress me. today, it impressed almost everybody.

  • 2009 Maison Champy Echezeaux 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Wine tasting. Ripe red fruit on nose with good spice. Already reasonably balanced, this will be a very good young drinking Grand Cru, but with substance ans style to merit the cellar.

  • 2009 Maison Albert Bichot Clos Vougeot Domaine du Clos Frantin 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Wine tasting. Big style for Clos Vougeot, showing very Gevrey character to me. Dense and meaty black fruit. Long and powerful without much nuance. Somewhat one dimensional for a 2009, but at least it is a very good dimension.

  • 2008 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Wine tasting. Black pepper dominates aromatically, black fruit and some other spice follow. Same black fruit on palate, interesting with modest concentration. Moderate length shows more spice and pepper than fruit. Will be a good younger drinking vintage of Chave Hermitage. Almost exactly the same as when tasted at the Domaine this time last year.
