A relatively soft and open style, rich fruit, clearly Rheingau though, lovely now.

Very complete, combines rich fruit with a lovely backbone of acidity and minerality, good length, floral notes too.

The Hendelberg is one of the highest and coolest vinyeards in the Rheingau and it shows in the cool, minerally character of the wine, lighter than either the Johannisberg or the Schlossberg. with less finesse than the former and less weight than the latter. Has opened up considerably since April 2010. Drink or hold.

A fragrant wine of elegance, finesse and stamina (bolt upright after two days). The best of the trio of Germain 1997's tasted today.

A concentrated Beaune wine, particularly in the context of the vintage. More masculine than the Vignes Franches, less finesse. Touch of chocolate, develops oxydative notes over the next days.

A bit of a peasant rather than a respectable bourgeois of the good city of Beaune, rather coarse tannins, a bit ungainly, but there is a certain basic quality.

Jammy, raisiny, not unattractive but a bit shallow and with a hint of unripeness in the tannins. A decent 2003.

Fresh and minerally, elegant, lovely fruit, a total contrast to the almost overripe 2003. Drinking well.

Deep purple, concentrated and structured, wonderfully rich fruit, liqueur, a beauty. Still very primary, but will be far superior to both the 2003 and 2004 and will last. Drink 2013-2025.

Ripe and sweet fruit but also a bit leafy, speciously attractive, will not make old bones.

The contrast with 2003 shows very clearly in the glass, tighter and a bit coarser, you sense the cool clay, more herbal and earthy, definitely a food wine.

Still quite closed and very primary, but clearly superior to both 2003 and 2004 in structure, depth and weight. Will develop into a very successful Médoc, fortunately I have 11 bottles left! Drink 2013 - 2020.

As so often this is a sturdy and serviceable wine, but the soil has little or no gravel and the wine is a bit four-square, lacking charm and breeding.

In a very nice place now, lovely and with the typical aroma of warm bricks, medium weight, much better than an earlier, slightly tired bottle.

A very charming wine, fragrant and femnine with cabernet franc to the fore, a very successful first vintage for the new regime, much better than some of the critics will have it.

Wonderful cassis fruit, a classic Pauillac, not quite the weight and power of the 1996 but has lost any dry tannins it may have had, drinking very well now, not as backward as the 1996.

Not quite living up to its reputation in this vintage, but still a very good and characteristic Saint-Estèphe, with the clay and graphite you would expect.

Slightly lighter style than some of the other Premiers Crus, but wonderfully elegant, lovely rôti, tangerine, perfectly judged oak, long, great finesse. I love it.

Classic and rich Sauternes, quite a big wine, much less finesse than the Rayne-Vigneau 1999, vanilla and caramel, much more marked by the wood. Good but not to my taste. I will sell the remaining bottles that I have.

Unsurpassable tonight for its exotic richness and weight - not even by the Yquem 1999!

Has most of the weight, power and oak you would expect from Yquem, but seems to be in a difficult phase right now, as Yquem often tends to be around the age of 10 (with the exception of the 1998). Revisit in 2014. May merit a higher score then.

NV Sekthaus Solter Cuvée Henri Réserve Brut 88 Points
Germany, Rheingau
Blend of 99/04/07. Fluffy fruit, Pinot Blanc clearly noticeable, a joy to drink now but will not age.

Dry, apply, not very disctinctive or appealing today. Or is it the comparison with the Solter Cuvée Henri Brut?
