Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • NV Nathalie Falmet Champagne Cuvée Le Val Cornet 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Rich and racy with vivid acid, plenty of pinot weight yet finishing bone dry and lean. The wine's balance between the impression of weight coupled the bright finish makes for an almost transformative impression on the palate. Heaps of character in this outstanding wine. Not as perfect as the Dom Perignon drunk the previous night, but this wine is arguably the more interesting.

  • 1996 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos St. Urbain 94 Points

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

Fabulous riesling that I mistook for an aged Trimbach Clos St. Hune. Dry style with wonderful mid palate richness (round fruits, some petrol, bottle age complexity), finishing long and complete. On opening the wine was tricky to pick - it seemed like an aromatic varietal with age but finished with a lack of fruit. With air, the wine fleshed out beautifully and really impressed in a powerful manner with unusual poise. Brilliant food match at Clooney restaurant (sous vide pig with apples and roast carrots were made for this wine) was for me, a transcendent food/wine experience - one which I have have only experienced a few times.

  • 2000 Domaine Trapet Chambertin 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Wine of the night at Clooney restaurant. Extremely rich and dense - both on the nose and palate. This is a well endowed wine that is dark, ripe and structured but is also approachable because of the almost new world sweetness of the fruit. The wines aromas and flavours veer towards the darker cherry and plum end of the spectrum. Multi-layered and long, this wine is drinking really well in early maturity and will go another 10 years, I think. Really gorgeous.

  • 1995 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Côte Blonde 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Stunning Cote Rotie that impressed on the night with its purity of fruit and clarity of structure. Velvet texture, perfectly judged and refined syrah fruit, clean and vibrant acid structure added up to an excellent experience. Out of a very cold cellar, this wine is singing today but will keep and continue to develop for years to come. Quintessential Cote Rotie.

  • 2009 Château de Rayne-Vigneau 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Excellent young Sauternes - super clean, fresh, beautifully judged oak handling. No botrytis but a smooth and sweet palate balanced by acid adds up to a very enjoyable young dessert wine that was a treat with the rosemary scented dessert.
