Hoyer's
Tasted Sunday, May 19, 2013 by AllRed with 769 views
The second Sunday group was postponed one week due to Mother's Day. Twelve tasters gathered at J's house to taste some wines. The themed tasting, double blind, is done in one flight. The wines are evaluated and ranked over approximately thirty minutes.
Tasted double blind
These wines were all very similar although a couple stood out as being a bit "sweeter" than the others. As a result, I thought we had a mix of current release old and new world Grenache.
Crimson color. Spice, plum, black fruit, vanilla and pine forest aromas. Chewy tannins with flavors of dark fruit and spice. Develops aromas of dark berry confit and then a bright, candied red fruit quality. The palate turns bright, with loads of red fruit and a long finish. 90+ pts.

Deep crimson color. Initially quite reticent aromatically, eventually giving spice and generic red fruit notes. The palate features flavors of plum, red fruit, spice and garrigue tones. Very well-balanced across the entire palate with a wonderfully long finish. Would have scored it much higher had there been any bouquet to this wine. 91 pts.

Deep crimson color. Aromas of red fruit, currants and pine needles at first, turning to perfumed florals and red fruit as it breathes in glass. Medium-bodied, with red berry fruit dominating the palate, along with subtle spice, vanilla and plum qualities. Subtle and restrained- elegant.

Deep crimson color. Aromas of dark fruit, pepper and pine forest with meaty undertones. A bacon note emerges with time in the glass. Medium- to full-bodied, featuring flavors of red and dark fruit, pepper, spice and vanilla. Long, balanced finish. Impressive and complete- good structure, acid and fruit.

Crimson color. Reticent; red fruit and pine notes eventually turn to a candied quality- blackberry syrup. Medium tannins; gained weight in the glass; flavors of blue and red fruit and spice with a nice finish. A bit too syrupy/candied compared to others in the flight. Perhaps domestic? 88+ pts.

(everyone noticed the candied quality here, and Domino hates that)

Light crimson color with a bit of a mushroomy, dirty quality to the bouquet, with red fruit underneath. Medium-bodied with flavors of red fruit and white pepper, turning to dark fruit as it sits. Never loses the odd, dirty quality.

Served with J's fresh home made made pastas, salad and grilled chicken.
Notes of apple and yeast follow through on the palate where it picks up some softened citrus qualities. Fine bead with a long finish; hints of citrus and stone.

Bright red fruit, spice and herb aromas. Balanced. Medium- to full-bodied, with red currant, pepper, spice and garrigue qualities with dark fruit on the long finish. 92-93 pts. I'd give this a couple of years yet. Check back in from 2015+.

Deep inky color with aromas of black fruit, incense, florals and spice. Full-bodied with firm, sweet tannins that are remarkably approachable given the structure and power here. Flavors of blue and black fruit, mineral, spice and blackberry liqueur. Long finish. The Viognier really shines through here. Impressive.

Pale honey gold color with aromas of pineapple, marmalade, botrytis and tropical fruit. Lighter on the palate than I expected, but with nice fruit- tropical- long finish. No reason to hold this any longer in my opinion. 92-93 pts.

Yellow color with aromas of quince, mineral, apple and pear with a subtle toasty undertone. Rich, full-bodied texture with flavors of apple and white fruit with a long finish. Develops a waxy, Rhonish quality. Initially thought Chard, but the weight and waxy quality had me in the Rhone blend camp.
