Clean and crisp lemon and lemon peel aromas and flavors. Long, precise and lean as well on palate with lots of good energy. Fun contrast to the rounder, fatter Vranken Diamant Bleu in the next glass.
Lush and slightly fat fruit aromas and flavors. Apple with a hint of hazelnut. Rounded and soft with less of an acidic edge than than the Diamant Blanc in the next glass.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Ripe and forward stone and orchard fruit aromas, in a lush and zaftig style. Floral, good spice, nice minty background notes. Mostly orchard fruit flavors, moderate power, moderate intensity. At its peak now, but will last for a while.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Bit reduced to start aromatically, but with time this came across as an elegant and leaner styled Corton Charlemagne (vs the Jadot 2002 in next glass) with more energy and minerality, even if less fruit and spice. Others liked this more than I did tonight.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
From magnum. Lush stone fruit aromas with lots of spice and floral support . Peach and ripe apple flavors with lots of spice on palate. Mouth coating. Much like the 2002 tasted earlier this evening, just more of everything, longer, more powerful.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Apple aromas with some lemon peel and floral notes and an elegant, lean charm. Similar on palate, perhaps slightly more forward and lush, with a long, classic and powerful finish.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Served single blind alongside the 1996 vintage. Ripe with all black fruit. Intense concentration, but far better balance than almost anybody else's 1997s. Forward, good length and start starting to show earthy evolutionary character.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Black fruit aromas and flavors with hints of emerging mushroom notes. Lean and powerful, almost with Grand Cru concentration. Subtle spice and gamy elements in the background. In its peak drinking window.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Served single blind alongside the 2003 vintage, this bottle was really shining tonight. Benefited from some quality decanter time. Mostly fresh black fruit aromas with some forest floor background notes, very generous spice. Similar flavor profile with a very accessible character. Drinking great now, certainly capable of improving for at least another decade, drinking well for probably two.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Tasted single blind alongside the 2002 vintage, this clearly showed 2003's more ripe character with lower levels of perceived acidity. Good fruit, meaty spice and balance, just shorter than the 2002, or the 96 or 97 in the prior flight.
