  • 2007 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Rosso di Montalcino 89 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino

Crimson core with light orange rim; some dried red fruit, slightly roasted, graham cracker, sour red fruit, slight floral; copper penny on the palate with red fruit, orange, smooth texture; really traditional; this bottle was at its peak though drinking very well; called '07 Felsina CC Riserva.

  • 2009 Poderi Luigi Einaudi Dogliani Vigna Tecc 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Dogliani

Dark core with light purple rim; lilac, violets, purple fruit, white pepper, faint herbs and smoked meat; dark tangy berry, rocky, served a little warm, traditional, a little rough hewn; very high quality Dolcetto that reminded me of a more subdued Northern Rhone; this could even benefit from even another couple years in bottle.

  • 2009 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva 90 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

90% Sangiovese, 7% Canaiolo, 3% Colorino; Light dull purple to rim; burning embers, a hint of green pepper, some sulfur, light dark berry fruit; light bodied, good acid, fresh fruit, crunchy red fruit cherry and cranberry on the finish, really drinkable; seemingly a different expression than other notes suggested this was very young and fresh almost French in style with what a few thought was from a cool climate; 90+.

  • 2009 E. Guigal Crozes-Hermitage 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

Dark purple with thin bright purple rim; candied dark berry, violet, blackberry; some good body, fairly tannic, a little black olive, lots of black pepper, rocky, long finish; broad shouldered wine in need of some more bottle age; 90+

Closing

A solid tasting with no dogs in the bunch. Hard to pick a favorite because they were so evenly matched and good in different ways.
