Flight 1 - Starter White & Red (2 Notes)

It's funny how the Gloria showed better than some entries.

  • 2009 Domaine Servin Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Light yellow; very intense talc right off the bat, grapefruit rind, bitter nose; round on entry then more seemingly under ripe, chalk, larger but sharp finish; needs some time to mellow, plenty of mineral but not sure the stuffing is there to be classic, though.

  • 2003 Château Gloria 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Dark crimson with bricking; Bordeaux stank, bandaid, red currant, plum, deep, layered, some oak, seemingly a bit more modern in style but some good texture and potential to improve over the next few years.

Flight 2 - Competition Wines (11 Notes)

Rules:
1. Bring the best red wine you paid <$100 for.
2. Double Blind

We saw many wines from good producers in hot vintages like '03 that are less desirable now, or some older bottles that were purchased before they appreciated >$100.

  • 2003 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia

Deep dense cloudy core with bricking; leather, nut, red currant, deep, rich, coffee; soft texture, fat and rich, noticeable tannin, leather, green pepper, roasted and ripe fruit; the density made this wine special; called Super Tuscan.

  • 2000 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Light red rim with deep red core; spice, leather, fresh cherry, dried rose, sexy, elegant, subtly powerful, huge midpalate, cedar; I felt this was a dead ringer for '04 Poggio di Sotto- drinking beautifully and youthful; everyone else was in Piedmont.

  • 2003 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Deeper color, more extraction, darker garnet core with red rim; vanilla, cherry, roses, violets, deep, sweet red and dark berry, plum; soft acid, somber, very fleshy, red apple skin on finish, grainy prickly tannin, slight heat on finish; I thought this was domestic Merlot- Pahlmeyer '01 is what I called; surprised how modern the wine showed with very little Bordeaux complexity- 2nd time having it and similar showings both times.

  • 2003 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Dark dull ruby; intense red cherry and cranberry, tea, layered, powerful, a little hard to describe as it was not delineated; big Burgundy, viscous and hugely awesome midpalate, lower acid, red and darker cherry, sweet, a fat ripe year, has to be Grand Cru, not candied, higher alcohol; needs more time but acid is a bit low; this was a wow wine and confirms the theory that lower level wines in '03 may be better and more balanced than GC and 1er Cru because these plots traditionally struggle to ripen; not sure how the Musigny would stack up to this but I'm very curious now.

  • 2002 Camus Pere & Fils Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

See through crimson core with orange rim, some sediment; sour cherry, strawberry, rhubarb, perfumed, sexy, much leaner profile than last Burg, some orange; black tea on the palate with cranberry, under ripe strawberry, soft and sexy with better acid cut but less nobility than last, some stone and stem; I was going to '01 Corton, but I kicked myself for not knowing this wine.

  • 2000 Carruades de Lafite 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark garnet, semi-translucent, lighter rim; minty, red currant, boxwood, younger, ash, green pepper, kind of singular; higher alcohol, leaner, red currant, intensely tart red fruit; though I like the style a bit more than a fat Cab this was not really expressing itself or its nobility, so I think it demands more time; I'd have a tough time paying over $50 for the wine at this point in time let alone $300!

  • 2003 Château Branaire-Ducru 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Dark garnet with rose rim, sediment; red currant, boxwood, young, floral, hints of oak, graphite, eucalyptus, pent up, Cabby; finishes too dry to be CA, bitter chocolate, young, bitter tannin on finish, tart, larger scaled; called '05 Leoville Barton; surprised that the acid was decent from this vintage.

  • 1995 Château Troplong Mondot 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Dark core with 1/4" bricking; sandy, cedar, plum, currant, cigar; initially a fleshy texture with chocolate covered cherry, then it becomes fiercely tannic, mouth filling, iron, sandalwood, leather, some rose; extremely youthful and in a very hard phase, not much pleasure drinking this one; people were not able to go back as far as 2000 it tasted so young; decanting brought out the tannin and dryness.

  • 2000 Château Pontet-Canet 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark core and garnet rim; tobacco, cow pie, green pepper, funk, Pauillac?, hint of horsey Brett, dark cherry, plum; tannic, full and rich, seemingly young, tasty, sour plum, nice fruit.

  • 1997 Tenuta di Collosorbo Brunello di Montalcino 90 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Dark semi-translucent core with lighter rim; dried leaves, nutty, cranberry, ripe cherry, fennel, celery seed, caraway, hinting at VA, sweet red fruit and spice on the finish; very pleasant but not a tremendous example; cool to find a '97 that's not over the hill.

  • 2004 Bodega Numanthia Toro Numanthia 84 Points

    Spain, Castilla y León, Toro

Opaque core with thin red rim; mint, paint thinner, tar, menthol; fat, no to low acid, red fruit, menthol, leather, older, hard as nails; this shows how blockbuster New World wines age...not well.

Flight 3 - Dessert (3 Notes)

The L'Eglise Clinet was a drunken pull to consume more. I probably should not have opened it, but I am glad I didn't bring it at another event where I'd have high expectations.

Both dessert wines were tasty, though.

  • 1993 Chateau Megyer Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos 93 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

Tawny core with large lighter orange yellow rim; orange marmalade, white raisin, honey, botrytis, apricot; medium + viscosity, tart, sweet but great acid; in a great place now.

  • 1995 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese 92 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

Amber yellow; sweet apple, white raisin, some botrytis, pineapple, honey; viscous but not as much as the Tokaji, sweet, supple, orange marmalade; still fairly youthful but starting to show some secondary nuance; others didn't like as much because it went after the sticky Tokaji.

  • 1999 Château L'Eglise-Clinet 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

At the end of the evening when palates were shot but this wine was dark, was not very giving almost closed, some thought it was corked but I knew it was the aged characteristics and soil, very earthy, also very tannic- was not given much of a decant but then again not sure it would have helped.
