In celebration of Laurent's B-Day. Wines served with a whole leg of venison which was some of the best I've ever had...leave it to a Frenchman to do the food.
It was an eclectic and terrific tasting of phenomenal wines. Bordeaux seemed to dominate but it was mainly their flavors with one being from Dunn and the other from Northern Italy.
The coolest thing was the vertical of wines from '93-'98
'93 Tertre Roteboeuf
'94 Leoville Las Cases
'95 Ermitage Pavillon
'96 San Leonardo
'97 St. Cosme Gigondas
'98 Servin Les Clos
I guess the others didn't get the memo.
Hard to pick favorites but the San Leonardo had a big impression on me, then the Vinding. Didn't want to quantify...just enjoy these great wines.
1997 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
Dull brownish brick, large light rim, lots of sediment; loads of spice, sweet cranberry, raspberry, leather, brick dust, animal, sweat, vegetal almost radish, aged and very complex; sour fruit, dried leaves, herbs, spicy, very medicinal, less fruit, lots of leather, aspirin; drink now as this should not improve any more, fully developed and very interesting it has held up this long; previous bottles 2 years ago were drinking better.

1998 Domaine Servin Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Golden green; faint apple, backed a touch, butter, faint nose overall; acidic, lemon, minerals galore, aged, some alcohol, slightly maderized; interesting, crazy it is that old.

2004 Château Cheval Blanc
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Dull crimson garnet, still looks fairly youthful; red currant, cocoa, floral, cedar, tobacco; luxurious texture though still firm tannin, not quite resolved, medicinal finish, herbs, persistent fruit; nailed it.

1994 Château Léoville Las Cases
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Dark core with quarter inch crimson rim; aged, Bordeaux, currant, cedar, green pepper, graphite, great spice and stank, cigar; chunkier tannin, aged though still drinking well, boxwood; fruit and balance really came out after an hour of air, I was worried how it would hold up at first but we should have waited a while.

1998 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain
USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
Dark core aged red rim; deep, funky, stank, leather, Brett, earth, currant, cranberry; smooth texture, very French in style, red fruit, green pepper, green tobacco; delicious; fooled everyone for Bordeaux.

2007 Vinding Montecarrubo Terre Siciliane Il Carrubo
Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane
Dull garnet, aged; funk, cranberry, sweet gingerbread, bread dough, fig, raspberry, garrigue; dense, sweeter, aged, resolved, fig, meaty, seemingly bitter [Grenache] finish; delicious; I called '01 Beaucastel...boy was I wrong but almost all of us were in the Rhone.

1993 Tertre Rôteboeuf
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Dark core with bricking and sediment; sweet fruit, sweet soy, green pepper, cigar, tobacco, funk, cabbage; Cabernet-like currant, leaner, long finish, good nobility; I was in right bank due to the firmness; 2nd or 3rd time having this and each time it has drunk spectacularly transcending the difficult vintage.

1995 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
From mag; dark core with browning red rim; black pepper, plastic, cooked dark fruit; still hard on the palate, deep, softer edges from time, beefy, tarry, rich, stewy fruit, lower acid; not really my preferred style of Syrah though I wonder what this would taste like if it had time to really open up; nailed it.

1996 Tenuta San Leonardo San Leonardo
Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Trentino, Vallagarina IGT
Dark core with aged brick rim; smoky, green, boxwood, red currant, olives, tobacco, cedar, clay, iodine; resolved tannin, tobacco, coffee, dense mouthfeel, leather, soft, bright fruit and green notes to counter; delicious and interesting; everyone was in Bordeaux; once revealed I could have kicked myself as I knew the flavor- that is Carmenere and it was very Chilean-like.
