Light medium red with clear edges. Medium intense nose of earth, berry, plum and thyme. Develops hints of black pepper and just keeps improving until it’s gone. Delicious earthy berry flavours and a beautiful balanced finish.

Just out of curiosity, I opened a bottle of the 1997 Château de Saint-Cosme Gigondas just to see how it was doing. While the 98 I had a couple of days ago was good, this one kicks ass! It elicited no less than 3 "Hey, this is pretty good!" from SWMBO, and she is not very free with her compliments to wines. And it was! Riper than the 98 but also sweeter going in and longer finish. Down to my last case and it is being moved to current drinking status!

Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Alpharetta, GA): Cloudy dull brick with paler rim; soy, orange peel, cedar, tobacco, sour cherry, denser aged nose; more glycerin on the palate, brick dust, mushroom, cooked red fruit, complex, aged and very interesting; was on '98 CdP before I remembered having this a few times- the brick dust was the giveaway, nailed it.

Tuesday Night Double Blind $60+ (Bin 75): Dull brownish brick, large light rim, lots of sediment; loads of spice, sweet cranberry, raspberry, leather, brick dust, animal, sweat, vegetal almost radish, aged and very complex; sour fruit, dried leaves, herbs, spicy, very medicinal, less fruit, lots of leather, aspirin; drink now as this should not improve any more, fully developed and very interesting it has held up this long; previous bottles 2 years ago were drinking better.

known this wine for 12 years and find it sensational that it is still as vibrant and as impressive, literally, at then. has a great nose of black pepper, garrigue, black cherry, sweet strawberry, very gigondas and the palate is even better, still succulent and juicy, savoury, tannins still giving structure and not a touch of dryness, the flavours abound in layers of fruits, herbs, spices, salts and goes on for longer that imagined. definitely not the biggest wine from this great estate but as much a pleasure and as well balanced as any wine made there.

Bill's Monthly Lunch - July 2011 (Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind. Medium red moving to orange at the rim. Rhone funk nose with a little sulphur which blew off making room for notes of mature red fruits and spice. Flavours similar to the palate with leather coming through on the medium length finish. This has decent acidity with mostly resolved tannins. After some time in the glass aromas of leather and tobacco started to show. This is a nice, typical mature Gigondas. I don’t see any point in holding this much longer as it’s drinking perfectly now. Excellent.

Last bottle out of a case. What a shame. It´s still a beauty. No blockbuster but very elegant and balanced. Contains everything great Gigondas stands for.

Nice depp red. Lots of great things in the nose of this one. Black pepper and dark fruits. A great Rhone nose. Nice flavours and some tannin and acid. Still not at its peak maybe. Very strong family relationship with the 98 we had yesterday.

Medium light red. Spicy red berry fruit nose, fairly light but still hanging on. Soft herbal red fruit nose and a very acid driven finish.
Very nice 1997 Gigondas that is still providing some pleasure long after it's predicted best before date.

PnP. Aromas and flavors of cherries, strawberries, lavender, and figs. Medium-bodied, with high acidity, and a medium finish.

should add to previous note that the note made was from second night open; better by far on second night, open, smooth...

What a great wine. Sweet red-toned fruit, bit of brett, silky, lifted and spicy and still with a bit of grip. At peak.
