As always, a good selection of wines at Weygandt. The new Hungarian selections from Sauska are a lot of fun.
All samples except the Vergnon.

Medium gold colored. Bright on the nose, with margarita-like combination of salt and lime, also some sweet white flowers and orange zest. Bright, zippy acid, the buttery-creamy elements are very subtle. Green melon, green apple and lime fruit, all of it crunchy and tangy. Begs for shellfish and a patio overlooking the sea.

Aromas of golden pear and peach, also nutty, floral. Creamy, honeyed texture, some pear and baked apple, peaches and honey. Slight mineral tones. Easy-drinking, tangy acid, but also rich (aged in 10% new French oak). Rides that Chardonnay middle ground very well.

On the nose: papaya, wildflowers, melon and honey. Creamy, rich, fruity with cantaloupe, melon and honey accented by some white pepper and spice. Fleshy but tangy and impressive for the price.

Nose of lemon curd, daisies, honeycomb, lime, rushing river rocks. On the palate, this is crisp, clean and tangy, only 13% alcohol. The apricot, green apple and lime play well together, and I enjoy the floral, perfumed aspects. Unassuming, lovely stuff, especially for the price.

Aromas of apricot, lemon and orange peel. Creamy, buttery, but lively with acid, grapefruit peel, minerals, lots of tangy lemons. I get some papaya, apricot jam and sweet honey, nervy acid and minerals balance it out. Great value for the money.

Light yellow color. Lots of white peach, green pear and lime, some honey and lime, minerals. Tangy acid on the palate, but not austere, with a wonderfully creamy texture. Apricot, green apples and lime juice, all fresh and lively, along with honeyed tea and chalk accents. Crisp, lively, an impressive Aussie Riesling.

Light cold color. Smells like a tropical fruit stand, with papaya, all sorts of melon and nectarine, sweet flowers and honeyed note. A deep aromatic plunge. Medium bodied, medium acid, a creamy-honeyed mouthfeel. Love the complex flavors of honeydew, papaya, orange slices mixed with lychee nut, nougat and honeycomb. Some mineral and floral potpourri notes as well. I’m interested in cellaring this for three or four years, maybe more.

This wine wows again. Such cut and minerals combined with toasted bread and orchard fruit. Wow.

Light gold color. Golden and green apples on the nose, mixing with sweet flowers. Orange peel, apricot and grapefruit on a medium-bodied frame with fine bubbles. Fresh acid, not super tangy or aggressive, but not soft either. Grapefruit, apricot, golden apples, some sea salt and toasted baguette. Fresh, playful, not the deepest Champagne but good quality stuff.

Pale straw color. Aromas of white peach, fresh grapefruit and sugar cane. Dry, tingling bubbles, with green apple and some lychee nut flavors. Fun, easy-drinking, but not a ton of cut or complexity. 11% alcohol.

A vibrant almost neon cherry color. Smells of watermelon candies, roses and sweet raspberry pie filling. Juicy and sweet on the palate, but not cloying, and it actually presents itself well on the palate. Full of attractive cherry cheesecake topping, raspberry jam and sweet rose flavors. Simple, sweet, pleasurable. 7% alcohol. The casual wine drinking ladies at the tasting absolutely loved this.

Smells of flowers, lychee and candied citrus peel. Sweet and creamy on the palate, lacking in precise acid, with honey, peach and mango nectar, and some sweet flowers. 10% alcohol.

Nose of black olives, seared meat, olive brine sauce, pepper and soy on top of currant jam. Fine tannins, medium acid, flavors of ripe and baked fruit slathered in meat and pepper sauce. Briny, and I also get a flavor that reminds me of baked beans, as strange as they may sound. Not tired, but not vibrant either. A weird wine, but I can’t help but like it. 60% Cab, 40% Syrah.

Bright cherry colored. Smells of raspberries and spice tea, some tobacco. Fresh and juicy on the palate, surprisingly tangy, with flavors of roses and clove accenting the red berry fruit. Surprisingly pleasant, especially for the price.

Dark purple color. Aromas of black cherries, plums, sweet vanilla and earth. Open on the palate, with a stylish, juicy approach. Blackberries and black cherry jam mixes in with cinnamon and teriyaki notes. Fleshy but not overripe or hot.

Smoky on the nose, spice and chestnut on top of gushing plums. Fresh acid and firm tannic structure provides backbone, but the mouthfeel is pure velvet. Plummy, dark berry-driven with loads of smoke, earth, cola, cedar and spices. Aged 15 months in 100% new French and American oak. For $15, this is a reliably awesome wine. Popular with pretty much everyone in the tasting group.

Medium ruby color. Spicy aromas mix with blueberry, vanilla and loamy soil. Firm tannins, smooth acid, a plush mouthfeel. Tangy black currants and juicy blueberries are backed up by notes of mocha, charcoal, cigar smoke and eucalyptus. Drinking well now but could hold for a few years. Very good for the price.

A forward, moderns style with plenty of currant fruit, but some solid mineral, pepper, earth and rock notes. A lot going on here, could be cellared.
