PHMG WAG: 2012 Oregon Pinot Noir

A tasting within a tasting as we had several Shea vineyard bottlings. The bottles were opened for over 7 hours and served in various Reidel and Schott Zweissel Pinot glasses. Some liked the "Extreme", I like the standard Burg glass.

• 2012 St. Innocent Pinot Blanc Freedom Hill Vineyard 89 Points

  USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

  Light yellow in color, this has an open nose of stone fruit, melon, apple and pear. Similar on the palate with nice acidity and length. Probably would have been better with shellfish than cheese. Very good QPR. Not bad for pinot noir mutation!

  Hints of smoke and spice overlying the cherry and plum fruit. Big wine, needs time.

• 2012 Broadley Vineyards Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard 91 Points

  Surprisingly one of the more drinkable OPN's in this tasting. Usually Broadley's need a few years, and maybe that's true for their 2012 estate wines-- haven't tried them yet. This wine has an open nose of black cherry, "dust"/earth, cola and they linger nicely on the palate. Best now-2017.

  Lagging a bit compared with the other Shea's in this tasting. Cherry pie with its spices, oak, and a little cough syrup. Try it soon if you have a few.

  Another nice Shea from St I; it's deep, silky, and long. Starts and ends with juicy red cherries, mixed in with spice, earth, and floral notes. Now - 2019

• 2012 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 90 Points

  A fairly dark OPN consistent with the vintage so far, this has black cherry, pie spice, plum, and a touch of mineral. Nice depth and length. One of the more approachable '12's we tasted at this event. Borderline QPR

  One of my fave's this evening, AND for a long time, going way back to the '92 Panther Creek Carter (made by Ken Wright). Dark and structured with dense black fruit and spice, yet manages to stay light on it's feet and be juicy. Best 2015-2019

  Finally a Pinot for Zin lovers! 2003 was the OPN vintage for Syrah lovers, now this... Briary blackberry, black cherry, and spice/vanilla on a jammy texture (significant glycerin). Fun but not for everyone (especially "purists") and probably be hard to guess blind. Use your zin window for this one: 3-5 years.

  We really enjoyed this now despite the FH mantra of being big and needing time. Earthy black fruit, spice, leather, and pie crust in a muscular package (for a pinot). Best 2015-2020

Generally these were firm and needing a bit more time. I'm going to save most of mine for a 5-7 year window.
