Introduction

James had let me know that he would be able to open up Domaine for the World Cup final. I wasn't in the full mood to be dealing with the crowds at the normal bars I would go to, so this was perfect. We decided to keep this more word of mouth to keep the crowd small.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2010 Radikon Slatnik 91 Points

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT

Nose: Just like a few months ago, the nose is extremely intriguing and savory with marmalade, red apples, spiced pears, oranges, some bruised peaches, and a touch of funk.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with high acidity and some tannins as well. The structure is very noticeable with marmalade, red apples, oranges, bruised peaches and some wild spices.

Overall: Yet again this is a very intriguing and savory wine. This is spot on for the style and scratches the geek side in a big way.

  • 2006 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir San Mateo County 88 Points

USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County

Nose: Very pretty and balanced nose with Red fruits, red cherries, spice tones, plums, and some roses. There is a warmness to the tones with a more feminine style to them and medium depth.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. The feel is more to the delicate and feminine side with red fruits, red cherries, spice notes, and some roses. The wine thins out slightly on the mid-palate, bu regains it on the finish.

Overall: This was my last bottle. This was also on straight pop and pour, and I wasn't able to really get back to it later in the day as it was drained fairly fast.

  • 2010 Rhys Pinot Noir San Mateo County 91 Points

USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County

Nose: The nose is very perfumed with red cherries, floral notes, rhubarb, spice notes, and some hints of pepper that creep in with some air. There is good warmth and balance to the tones with excellent depth too.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity and silky tannins. There is a real round quality to the tones of red cherries, floral notes, rhubarb, and some spice tones.

Overall: It's really hard to keep my hands off of this right now. It's very attractive with a really nice red fruit core. While it's delicious now, I'd really like to see where this goes when the whole cluster influence completely comes together.

  • 2012 Forlorn Hope Pinot Gris Rosé Kirschenmann 91 Points

    USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi

Nose: The nose is very complex with oranges, cinnamon spices, white fruits, pears, peaches, and wild spice notes. The skin contact shows through with the extra range of tones and it really adds to the wine.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity. There is a fatness to the feel with some tannins and oranges, white fruits, cinnamon spices, wild spices, and a whole lot of peaches.

Overall: This is no weak attempt at doing an Orange wine. The skin contact really benefited the wine by adding complexity and depth to it and making it very interesting. This is my first experience with Forlorn Hope, and I hope I get to sample some of their other wares in the near future.

  • 2009 Marcel Lapierre Morgon 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

Nose: The nose is perfumed and high-toned with red cherries, fresh picked berries, roses, red currants, and some bubblegum notes. There is a nice red fruit core with medium depth.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity. The feel is nice and polished with red cherries, fresh picked berries, red currants, and a touch of bubblegum. There is a completeness to the feel on the palate with a silky quality as well.

Overall: This didn't show as complex as it did when it was young, but the feel has rounded out a lot more. I got to this earlier after it was opened and wasn't able to return to it unfortunately. I would like to have followed it with air, but with 10 drinkers watching the game, that would always be tough.

  • 2009 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée 3.14 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

Nose: Much bigger than the Lapierre with currants, red fruits, cherries, spice tones, berries, and some roses. There is good depth to this with a richness to it too.

Taste: Full bodied with medium acidity. Even with it being on the bigger side, it holds it well and there is elegance to it with currants, red cherries, red berries, and some roses.

Overall: I finally was able to have some of this. It has seemed like every time that Tooch has opened this up at domaine, I have missed it. Well, not this time. It's really good right now and I would like to see where this goes with a few more years as well. This was certainly a stark comparison to the Lapierre and maybe a bit unfair to the Lapierre, but, c'est la vie.

  • 1990 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Nose: The nose shows off obvious maturity, but is also extremely well balanced with peaches, baked brie, crisco tones, pears, honey, green apples, and some figs. There is serious layering to the tones.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with crisp medium+ acidity. While it's an Auslese and 23+ years old, the acidity is still kicking quite well with peaches, crisco, honey, pears, green apples, and some fig notes on the back end.

Overall: This was fantastic. It showed off all of the class and depth I would expect from this. This was a real treat to drink, and naturally there had to be some German wine to honor Germany winning the World Cup.

  • 2005 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

    Germany, Nahe

Nose: There is a good dose of petrol that is noticeable, but not overpowering along with green apples, bing cherries, figs, and white peaches. There is excellent balance to the tones with good layering to them too.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity. The feel is showing some maturity in that there is layering and refinement with green apples, figs, peaches, saline, and some petrol tones as well.

Overall: This is drinking great right now. The acidity is perfectly in balance with the rest of the wine. The tones are showing right in that region of youth and maturity that can make this really interesting.

  • NV Jose Dhondt Champagne Rosé de Saignée Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Nose: There is a real distinct freshness to the nose with red fruits, cherries, crackers, crushed rocks, and citrus tones. There is excellent depth to the nose along with a precision to it.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity. There is a real tartness to the acidity that does make it more on the dominant side with red fruits, cherries, crackers, and crushed rocks.

Overall: The Chardonnay showed through on both the nose and palate. While the color was a medium pink, the saignee didn't seem to show off too much as it was more complimentary to the wine. I wasn't able to note the disgorgement, but this was a recent bottle. I would like to see what this could do with an extra year or two on it.

  • 1985 E. Guigal Hermitage 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Nose: This took an hour or so to get going, but when it opened up, it was gorgeous and flowing with leather, black pepper, black cherries, spice tones, tobacco, and some black fruits. There was excellent depth with a real layering to the tones.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity. The feel is layered and elegant with black pepper, leather, black cherries, tobacco, and some black fruits. There are still some supporting tannins that provide a nice backbone.

Overall: This needed about an hour to 90 minutes to finally rev up. It's been 5 years since the last bottle and this one was more like my first bottle(which was really good) thankfully.

  • NV Frank Cornelissen MunJebel Rosso 7 65 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Sicilia

I really don't want to say too much about this very forgettable wine. There was a ton of spritz on the nose with some cranberries, dark red cherries, and various over-ripe tones. The palate was a near trainwreck as it was VA city. While it's not one of the worst wines I've ever hard, it is far from enjoyable and there was a reason that there was half the bottle left by the time everyone left.

Closing

There was no set theme, but independently a bunch of us went with more wine geek-styled wines. Two German wines had to naturally be included (no one was really rooting for Argentina that was actually rooting for a team) and the bubbles were opened in celebration of the win.

This has been my favorite World Cup since I started watching the World Cup in 90, and this was a great way to finish off a great tournament.
