Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 1988 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 89 Points

    France, Champagne

Much darker and more advanced than I would expect from a top 1988, given the acidity and freshness I still find in many bottles. Meyer lemon, hay and some butterscotch. Good fruit concentration, but less energy and effervescence than I'd prefer. Hopefully other bottles are more fresh.

  • 2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Probably the best bottle of this wine I can recall, this is ever-so-slightly starting to soften, while still retaining lots of verve and energy, showcasing great lemon and lemon zest aromas and flavors throughout.

  • 2002 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Rosé Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Strawberry, tart red cherry and some apple with some good spice providing an excellent Pinot character. Still very young with good acidity and minerality, this has moderately good depth, length and intensity.

  • 2009 Aubert Chardonnay Lauren Estate Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Lots of peach and poached pear with plenty of sweet spice, also still showing some pronounced new oak. On the border between very ripe and too ripe, but this still maintains enough balance with acidity and concentration. I would think this will get more interesting again as it starts showing some evolution.

  • 2011 Rivers-Marie Chardonnay B. Thieriot Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Apple and peach with good concentration and nice acidity. Slightly better vs when last tried shortly after release, but I 'd like a little more length and persistence. Perhaps will pick up some weight with more time in the cellar.

  • 2006 Sine Qua Non The Hoodoo Man 86 Points

    USA, California

Powerful fruit but I don't think age has been kind. This was much better within a few years of release. Tonight this came across as too exotic and tropical for my tastes tonight, and the alcohol further accentuated with the fruit slightly softened with age.

  • 2001 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Sulfur took some time to soften, and never fully dissipated. Starts with impressive power and ripe yellow and red apple with some stone fruit notes. Fruit intensity gives way to firm structure and lingering minerality. Long and concentrated, while also retaining great freshness. Good now, but i'd expect this will continue to improve.

  • 2001 Domaine Perrot-Minot Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Served alongside Perrot-Minot 2001 Mazoyeres-Chambertin. All black fruit with moderate spice, well integrated new oak. Hints of some animale and gamy background notes. I found the two wines very similar, no surprise given geographic proximity, but the Mazoyeres just showing slightly "more" of everything.

  • 2001 Domaine Perrot-Minot Mazoyères-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru

Served along the Perrot-Minot 2001 Charmes-Chambertin. both showed classically Gevrey style, with black fruit, woodsy spice, and gamy of sauvage notes. Good overall balance with better freshness than i expected. i agreed with most tasters tonight, slightly preferring this Mazoyeres vs the Charmes in the next glass.

  • 1989 Château Montrose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Bretty, dirty, barnyardy...to the extent some thought corked. But this had been open and decanted for hours, so if corked would have been worse. Off bottle?

  • 1989 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Better than other bottles I've had before, but this is a wine I have rarely enjoyed as much as others have. Ripe black berry aromas with lots of horsey character with black pepper and spice. Similar on palate with enough freshness, but also showing plenty of barnyard. Most others liked this more than I did tonight.

  • 2003 Château Rieussec 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

From 375 ml bottle, served alongside the 2001 vintage. I don't recall having this wine in many years. Dark color. Wine's extreme ripeness is its dominant character, somewhat one dimensional. Pleasant, but lost in the shadow of the 2001.

  • 2001 Château Rieussec 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

From 375 ml bottle, served alongside the 2003. Floral start with creme caramel, intense apricot. Similar flavors with layers of flavor that unfold. Great now, with continued upside from here.
