Introduction

Big lump of beef, paris mash and peas followed by cheese with a couple of mature Northern Rhones, a mature Hunter and a token Barossa

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 1998 Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Nose of mushrooms, leather, herbs, spice - black peppers, some black olives, biscuit. In the mouth medium minus intensity flavours of liquorice, aniseed, black olives, slight mushroom and leather with some spicy notes. Find tannins and it's quite warm on the medium plus length. Goes down rather too easily. Nice

  • 2002 Glaetzer Shiraz Nefertiti Barossa Valley

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

slight reductive notes the ripe cherry and blackberry compote, chocolate, vanilla, spice but it's all a bit tired and flat as well. In the mouth the wine has plentiful flavours of red and black cherry and berry with fine tannins. It doesn't really have any obvious tertiary characteristics and is quite simple. Nothing specifically wrong, perhaps just a little out of whack....hmm

  • 1999 Les Vins de Vienne Côte-Rôtie Les Essartailles

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

very meaty with slight leather aromas, a herbaceous quality, peppery spice, woody notes, slight autumn leaves and bonfires, biscuit. In the mouth there is juicy acidity, peppery spice, leather, muted and lean black fruit and talc like tannin, the alcohol is quite warm on the long finish. nice

  • 2000 Mount Pleasant Wines Shiraz Maurice O'Shea

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

On the nose there are aromas of vanilla, slight plum and black fruit, chocolate, coffee notes, lifted sweet spice with a peppery core. In the mouth the wine has juicy , almost searing, acidity, black peppercorns, slight leather and meat with grainy, chalky tannin. It's very long as well. Very nice.

Closing

the Delas Frere was the lightest of the bunch but had an almost ethereal quality, the maurice and the essartailles complimented each other superbly - very yin and yang and very nice. The nefertiti wasn't really my thing I must confess and leads me to believe I should drink all of my older Barossa Shiraz...Hmm.
