Introduction

A wonderful opportunity to sample all 3 bottlings/varietals -- Paleo Rosso (cab franc), Scrio (syrah) and Messorio (merlot) -- both young and mature. The stars of the evening were the ripe and meticulously selected fruit and masterful wine-making. Older wines showed exceptionally well, while the younger vintages were equally impressive in their own way.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2004 Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Wonderful flowery aromatics soar from under a beautiful nose of an evolved Bordeaux. Taste of fully ripe red fruit and plum is buttressed by notes of mushrooms and earthy aromatics. Very floral, particularly when compared with a darker and more extracted syrahs. Beautiful balance overall. Drinking perfectly now.

  • 2010 Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Smoky, extracted fruit core. Violets and fruit nose. Blueberry liquor, tangy and mineral. Just a hint of scratchy tannins -- just needs time. Great potential, delicious now.

  • 2009 Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Purple and still somewhat closed wine. Less mineral and attractive than '10. Hint of creamy oak atop of ripe, sweet fruit. Good, but wished for a better length and balance.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2000 Le Macchiole Scrio Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Darker in color and taste than Paleo. Almost Cote-Rotie like -- dark chocolate, hint of vanilla, meat, dried spices; almost viscous in texture. Tangy and sweet in the mouth, powerful and ripe wine. Excellent now and still evolving -- denser and more primary still than the '04.

  • 2010 Le Macchiole Scrio Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Young, vibrant, still a puppy. Hint of sour, smoky blackberry extract. Mineral, with a youthful streak of milk chocolate that should turn darker and more earthy with aging. Has all the right stuffing.

  • 2004 Le Macchiole Scrio Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

A more closed aromatically and at the same time more advanced wine than the '00. Similar profile of cocoa powder, earth, with a hint of olive, sage and melange of dark fruit. Not as concentrated as the '00.

Flight 3 (6 Notes)

  • 2006 Le Macchiole Messorio Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Young, juicy and fragrant. The lilac and violets aromatics melded with the aroma of macerated berries. A hint of mint and hazelnuts added a unique aromatics, followed by a taste of dark chocolate, tea and dried dusty carnations. The wine continued to burst with layers of new flavors. More complex and playful that the '99-01 trio. Supple, sexy, vibrant. Outstanding.

  • 2001 Le Macchiole Messorio Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

My favorite wine in the '99-'01 triad. This wine seemed better knit and more silky than its predecessors. Cassis liquor, mineral and flowing, long and balanced, with hint of mint and grilled bread crust. Delicious.

  • 2000 Le Macchiole Messorio Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Aged bordeaux-like nose. Earth, leather, cedar, mushrooms, sour jammy red fruits. Mature and exquisite, with just a hint of drying out. Would probably drink this before '99.

  • 1999 Le Macchiole Messorio Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Evolved sweet dark fruit -- plums, berries mixed with a gritty bitter sweet cocoa powder. Recalled Rutherford dust tingle. The fruit is melded together and more linear than a more playful Scrio. Violets on the nose. Tangy, dense wine with viscous glycerin legs. Ripe and good.

  • 2010 Le Macchiole Messorio Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Tannic and slightly bitter now. Nuts, jammy extracted red berries carried by a long and substantial mouthfeel. Linear now -- needs time to come together.

  • 2010 Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri

Violets, red/blue fruit nose. Delicious and juicy, and at the same time supple and quick. Mild cab tannins are felt in the front of the mouth, aiding to a silky follow through. Just a hint of stem taste in the finish, should resolve with aging. Very pretty everyday wine.
