A wonderful opportunity to sample all 3 bottlings/varietals -- Paleo Rosso (cab franc), Scrio (syrah) and Messorio (merlot) -- both young and mature. The stars of the evening were the ripe and meticulously selected fruit and masterful wine-making. Older wines showed exceptionally well, while the younger vintages were equally impressive in their own way.
2004 Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso
Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Wonderful flowery aromatics soar from under a beautiful nose of an evolved Bordeaux. Taste of fully ripe red fruit and plum is buttressed by notes of mushrooms and earthy aromatics. Very floral, particularly when compared with a darker and more extracted syrahs. Beautiful balance overall. Drinking perfectly now.

2010 Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso

Smoky, extracted fruit core. Violets and fruit nose. Blueberry liquor, tangy and mineral. Just a hint of scratchy tannins -- just needs time. Great potential, delicious now.

Purple and still somewhat closed wine. Less mineral and attractive than '10. Hint of creamy oak atop of ripe, sweet fruit. Good, but wished for a better length and balance.
