Introduction

MS and I together with wives. Wines were delivered to the restaurant the day before and superbly well prepared by their sommelier. All wines were declared correct and without flaws. So, a great start on ANY evening!

Flight 1 - White for a start (2 Notes)

Unfortunately, these wines didn't do much for wife and I, but as it was my first Silex, it was nevertheless a fantastic start of the evening.

  • 2011 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane 84 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

Have no bearing in my world of wines. Will keep the rest for a long time as the perfumey character of Viognier does nothing for us.

Happy, fruity, well oaked, young inviting nose. Chardonnay aromas on perfume speed.
Per os: Low level acids and a small, very charming, bitter twist in the finish. Flowery, but less perfumed than the nose. Violets. Intense, but short and rather non-complex.
    Typical for the grape.
    Wife: Frown.

  • 2006 Didier Dagueneau Silex 87 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

I was not even close in picking this one. I was way off on all accounts: grape, year and geography.

A fruity, flowery bouquet that also sports a bit of diesel fumes.
On the palate, the oak treatment steps forward a little bit and the whole creation has mellow acids and a very youthful feeling. The finish is abrupt and the wine doesn't fly. Quite delicious but no cigar.

Flight 2 - The first red flight (3 Notes)

  • 2012 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Beaux Frères Vineyard 87 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge

I would not at all call this Burgundian in style.

Blinded, my first impression was of a rather dull New World meritage, but when suddenly the P-word was mentioned, my senses stopped regarding this as a bland meritage and instead registered it as an ok PN.

Nose: Raisins, plums, very young and quite simple.
Palate: Rich plummy aromas. Suffers from a lack of tannic structure/backbone. Has a flaccid feeling. The PN spice peeks out after a long time in the glass.
Did not do well with the food.

  • 1989 Couly-Dutheil Chinon Clos de l'Olive 91 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

Licorice, cough syrup, maturity, wet terracotta, star fruit: CF with a big fat label on it. Vegetalia and exciting, exotic woods. Resolved tannins, M++ acids and not as good as I remember the previous btl. Rather empty mid-palate but a cozy long and lingering finish.

No problems at all to figure out exactly what this was.

    Wife: frowned.

  • 1996 Château Léoville Barton 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Wanted this to perform better, but guess this is good enough... (I was 90% sure this was my wine.)

    Red, mature colours.
Nose: Maturing aromas of brown earth, industrial rubber and porty streaks.
Mouth: Wide, fine, maturing Bdx. M body, M+ acids and M++ tannins. Balanced, fine tuned, sumi ink, long finish. The mouth feel is with a very strong presence on tounge, gums and teeth.

Flight 3 - The second red flight (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Duemani Cabernet Franc Duemani 90 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Costa Toscana

A very good M++ tannic structure. I was not even close to figure this one out as a CF. (Got stuck with Nebbiolo.)
Young and intense wine that is uperbly balanced and shows off purity of fruit. Little too straight forward to merit a higher score today, but if Wine-Strategies gets it right, I believe this will deliver even more pleasure some five or so so years down the line.

  • 2008 Sheridan Vineyard L'Orage 95 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley

The best performing wine of the evening.

    Woah!
Perfectly my taste and precisely what to enjoy with great food. Mature tannic gothic structures R US!

Mature strong tannins and M+++ acids, some dill with some CF star fruit/vegetal aromas as well as asphalt and other dark matter. In the end game, there was a charming hint of artificial blueberries.

Amazing with a steak today and even more so after some 5-or-more yrs of rest. Only 7 btls of this magnificent wine to go.

  • 2011 Domaine Tempier Bandol La Migoua 85 Points

    France, Provence, Bandol

Little too simple and straight forward and not on par with the other TN's here. Acids M++, Tannins M++, M body. Its constitution is hollow and non-muscular. Felt as if it fell apart during dinner.
Would have been nice with a bit of more rustic charm.

Closing

It was a magical evening with both great performances and disappointments. As it always should be.
The sommelier served us a Riesling blinded, and we nailed it as a German Riesling, but we failed to decide exactly which part of Germany it was from.
We need to study more and harder :-)
