Maison Vauron, Auckland, New Zealand

The chance to hear Wink Lorch speak about the wonderful wines of the Jura was just too good an opportunity to pass up. Her book on the region is the definitive guide and her presentation of the tasting was excellent - she allows the wines to do most of the talking! As per usual, the wine retainer hosting the event, Miison Vauron did a spectacular job - offering a four course meal (individually plated by their new chef) to match the wines.
Hapuka with curry emulsion
Chicken Ballotine with Vin Jaune, mushroom duxelle

Roast Apricots, Chocolate Sabayon
2012 Tissot (Bénédicte et Stéphane / André et Mireille) Chardonnay Arbois Empreinte 88 Points
France, Jura, Arbois
Subtle Jura oxi cut on the bight and juicy nose. High acid and mineral, light and unoaked. Masses of character with a steely intensity. Easy to drink and stylish.

2013 Peggy et Jean Pascal Buronfosse Côtes du Jura Pres du Bief 86 Points
France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Fruity but slightly dirty nose (aspects of old oak?), broad and structured, very dry. Very mineral with a lot of persistence. Cloves and other spice with green apple. Wink Lorch voiced reservations about the nose of the wine.

2011 Peggy et Jean Pascal Buronfosse Côtes du Jura Entre Deux -- Ouillé 88 Points
France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Creamy nose (old oak?), sauteed apples, lean texture with high acid. The savory nose also features tobacco, gun flint and granite. Very nice, although the creamy aspect of the wine tends to dominate, somewhat. Certainly richer than the 2013 than the Buronfosse "Pres du Bief" 2013. Excellent.

2012 Domaine Jacques Tissot Chardonnay En Barberon 92 Points
France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Toasty nose, hint of oxi/Jura cut. This is a very stylish wine - very bright, very young, very fine. Beautiful spice. Outstanding.

2011 Peggy et Jean Pascal Buronfosse Côtes du Jura L'Hôpital 89 Points
France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
touch of old oak. sour apples. hint of the Jura oxi/cut on nose. a wine driven by acidity, this shows wonderful balance, a steely minerality and a creamy finish. Certainly showing better than the "entre deux" 2001, tonight.

2010 Tissot (Bénédicte et Stéphane / André et Mireille) Savagnin Arbois 92 Points
France, Jura, Arbois
non-ouille. very oxidised. sweet entry, very rich and oxidised palate. green apples, raisins, walnuts, lemon meringue. perhaps slightly cloying on the finish. this is outstanding but feels over done and slightly coarse compared to the 2007 Tissot Chateau Chalon.

NV Tissot (Bénédicte et Stéphane / André et Mireille) Macvin du Jura Poulsard-Savagnin with marc 86 Points
France, Jura, Macvin du Jura
Difficult to score this as a drink and impossible to score it as a wine as it is not a wine. The grape juice is seriously cut by a fiery grappa-like aroma and taste. Aromas of dirt tea combine with a very sweet palate, which is certainly cut by the spirit. Knowing how this is made allows me to appreciate it more than I have in the past and it certainly worked well with a dish of roast apricots with a chocolate sabayon.
