Introduction

Five of us got together to drink four La Las. We were able to assemble mini vertical and horizontal as we had the 90 and 91 La Turque and La Mouline. IMO, La Las are incredible consistent.

Flight 1 - Champagne (2 Notes)

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Brut Rosé 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Only a slight hint of pink, copper color. The oxidative style is closer to substance than initial. Pale but ripe red fruits, strawberry jam, rose, a hint of va, burnt sugar and mineral. Very rich sweet palate, sweet and sour sauce, mineral, bright acidity and long finish. Very interesting and unique expression of Rose.

  • 2003 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Very ripe yellow fruits but good freshness, lemon curd, also fresh apple, smoked oyster, oyster shell and brioche. Excellent concentration, quite dense, fine mousse, sweet yellow fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and love sweet finish. A lot going on here. It will need another decade to reach the peak but already quite enjoyable with ample fruits.

Flight 2 - White (3 Notes)

  • 2010 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 92 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

The style seems quite consistent from vintage to vintage. Ripe yellow fruits, pineapple, lemon curd, noticeable oak, coconut and spicy spices. Very good concentration, ripe yellow fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and sweet medium long finish that ends with a bit of heat. This seems to age reasonable well and this may need a few more years to integrate oak.

  • 2014 Peter Michael Sauvignon Blanc L'Apres-Midi 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley

Riper style of sauvignon blanc, apple, kiwi, gooseberry and a hint of mint. Quite concentrated for a SB, slightly lacking acidity. Nice summer night wine for Cali chardonnay lovers.

  • 2005 Etienne Sauzet Chevalier-Montrachet 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Perhaps the most advanced example from the same batch but not quite premoxed. Ripe yellow fruits, honey, burnt sugar and mineral. Very good concentration, ripe yellow fruit driven palate impression, good mineral presence, bright acidity and medium finish. Not showing as well as I expected.

Flight 3 - La La (4 Notes)

  • 1990 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Pop and pour and drank over three hours. Complex nose displaying decadent black fruits, tapenade, hoisin, liquid smoke, chocolate, mineral and herbs de province. Silky and polished palate, nicely layered fruits, bright acidity, nicely integrated tannins and lovely sweet black fruit driven finish that resonates. This seems to be the most soft and round of the flight. Quite enjoyable but not close to being perfect.

  • 1991 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 97 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

This seems much younger and denser than the 90. Intense youthful black fruit, blackberry, tapenade, charred steak, anise, rose and mineral. Excellent concentration, beautifully layered fruits, decadent black fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity, strong presence of mineral, nicely integrated tannins and lovely long finish. Very impressive and hedonistic.

  • 1990 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 98 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Expressive nose displaying black fruit, blackberry, black cherry, liquid smoke, lavender, tapenade and mineral. Excellent concentration, feels denser and rounder than the La Turques. Excellent concentration, sweet black fruit driven palate impression, polished, round and dense, bright acidity and lovely long finish. Not quite perfect this time but darn close. 98 pts for this wine is a bit of disappointment. Drinking incredibly well.

  • 1991 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 99 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Perhaps the best La La of the evening. Similar concentration level as the 90 La Mouline but seems more youthful and structured. Expressive nose displaying youthful black fruit, crushed blackberry, lavender, a hint of garrigue, truffle and mineral. Exceptional concentration, decadent youthful black fruit driven palate impression, beautifully layered, quite dense yet shows perfect balance, bright acidity and lovely long finish. Although all La las showed very well, I prefer the La Moulines to La Turques in this occasion. My wine of the night.
