Introduction

Dan calls upon an annual wines that don't suck plus great pizza event. Who are we to refuse?

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2013 Liquid Farm Chardonnay Golden Slope 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Very well balanced chardonnay. Drank it at Di Fara. No too much or any oak. Nice floral and citrus on the nose. (Not too many formal notes taken)

  • 2004 Saxum Bone Rock James Berry Vineyard 94 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Offline for wine and pizza. Clearly WOTN material. Full body, great nose, medium+ (long finish) . Dark color as others have noted, and still have years to go imho. The spices take the right spot (ratio of spices to fruit), where they are secondary, but not hidden (if it makes some sense). Berries on the nose. Enjoyable. Took two tastes from it to revisit over the evening. (for what a vote by the glass counts :-) )

  • 2010 Tercero Cuvée Loco Larner Vineyard 89 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Ballard Canyon

Fitted well the theme (wines that don't suck plus great pizza). Nice nose, great darker brick color. Nice finish on the palate. imho, good balance on fruit. Maybe still young?

  • 2011 Passopisciaro Passopisciaro 90 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane

Very nice, good selection for Italian meal or just pizza, but much better for a full (meat based meal). Tasted at Di Fara's offline

  • 2007 Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino 90 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Was very happy to drink it though I am not sure I'd proactively seek another bottle: More earthy, darker brown red compared with the '07 Taurasi I tasted along side. It's a matter of preference- more earth and secondary notes here. More fruit front to Taurasi. Both were nice.

  • 2002 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Perrières Vieilles Vignes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Coming from a non regular PN consumer, this is a good one. Darker red compared to other PN's from Côte de Beaune I had before. Dry fruits on nose and palate. Medium finish. Very nice QPR. If an opportunity arise, be happy to revisit. 90-91

  • 2008 Tenuta Monteti Caburnio Toscana IGT 89 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

A matter of personal preference. If you'd like more fruit front IGT it is certainly going to be one that you would enjoy. Very nice floral nose. Not too many additional formal notes aside of good match to pizza (Di Fara's offline)

89-90 for me, more for many others at the offline

Postscript: did get better the second day, and made nice beef stew base (the leftover)

  • 2002 Whitehall Lane Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Nice, at a good peak. I would probably enjoy drinking more of it in the future. Still has some time to go (Di Fara Pizza offline)

Closing

Other wines tasted with too few notes to justify a tasting note:
Becklyn Cab '13 (Needs longer decanting, while the '12 was also good PnP- Dan reported it was signing day 2 and 3), '93 ACV (probably last time I'd taste it for a while unless any friend has one hidden in their cellar), '06 Pierre Gimmonnet Flueron BdB (was younger than I expected, very nice, interesting), Louis Jadot Beaune Graves '04 (mmm.... yummi full meal white)

Pizza of the night: The veggies, the white, and the small cherry tomatos and spices.

Good company, can't have more pizza this month :-)
