Introduction

Dinner organized by an incredibly generous long-time Burgundy appreciator. While there were some confusing and under-performing bottles, there were far more amazing and legendary bottles.

Flight 1 - Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne & Ramonet Montrachet (7 Notes)

  • 2009 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Served blind in what turned out to be Coche CC and Ramonet Montrachet flight. Ripe apple, some pear with massive concentration. Faint tropical hints give an exotic note without detracting from the wine's textural beauty. My #2 wine in the flight.

  • 2009 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Served blind in what turned out to be Coche CC and Ramonet Montrachet flight. All open several hours before serving. Also showcasing ripe apple and pear with lots of spice. This kept evolving in glass and getting increasing nuanced and interesting. An overall beauty already.

  • 2004 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Served blind in what turned out to be Coche CC and Ramonet Montrachet flight. All open several hours before serving. Burly powerhouse of a wine with lots of mineral textures with slightly subdued aromatics in the context of this amazing flight.

  • 2004 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Served blind in what turned out to be Coche CC and Ramonet Montrachet flight. All open several hours before serving. Ripe fruit with some mint and nutty hints. Subtle and nuanced, but slightly less exceptional vs another bottle from a few months ago.

  • 2006 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Served blind in what turned out to be Coche CC and Ramonet Montrachet flight. All open several hours before serving. Sensational nose shows baked apple, mango, papaya, baking spice and some mint. Similar flavors but the ripeness came across more overtly. 96 point nose, 92 point flavors.

  • 1992 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Served blind in what turned out to be Coche CC and Ramonet Montrachet flight. All open several hours before serving. This was very advanced and just moderately interesting. Sadly this was nothing like the bottle from the same person at dinner one year ago.

  • 1982 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

From magnum Served blind following the Coche CC and Ramonet Montrachet flight. All open several hours before serving. Stunning wine. Still fresh fruit, great spice, concentration and harmony. Easily amongst my top 5 white wines ever tasting.

I took 1/2 glass back to my hotel in a plastic "to go" soup container. It sat on the desk overnight and was almost as sensational at room temp this morning.

Flight 2 - La Tâche & Cros Parantoux (6 Notes)

One of the most perplexing flights of wine I have tasted in years.

  • 1999 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

From magnum. Served blind in what turned out to be a nice Vosne flight. Black and red cherry aromas and flavors with subtle spice that made us think it completely de-stemmed (vs the majority of the flight which was LaTache). Very elegant overall with a powerful, expanding finish. I certainly liked this a lot, but others liked this even more.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Served blind in what turned out to be a nice Vosne flight. Superb spice and red fruit. Incredibly elegant but backward. Also clearly showing the expected La Tâche spice, but I was surprised when this turned out to be from 2010 because it didn't quite have the concentration I expected (yet). 95-96+ point potential.

  • 2005 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Served blind in a nice Vosne flight. My first time tasting this vintage. Corked. Jeremy thought it corked right away, it took me another 2-3 minutes to agree.

  • 2003 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Served blind in what turned out to be a nice Vosne flight. Also easily identifiable as La Tâche, this was also easy to identify as from 2003. Extremely ripe and concentrated with bold spice to match, this hasn't quite settled down into the elegance I know to expect from La Tâche as it ages. I won't open my other 2 bottles for at least another decade.

  • 1996 Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

From magnum. Served blind in what turned out to be a nice Vosne flight. Intense red berry flavors and aromas with great density and power. Spice started as nicely pleasant, then kept intensifying with more time in glass. In fact, everything continued to evolve with more nuance unfolding with more time/air. This wine didn't jump out as great when first tasted, but was clearly monumental within 15-20 of starting to assess the flight. Magnum brought tonight by its generous original owner.

  • 1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Served blind in what turned out to be a nice Vosne flight. A completely perplexing wine. We all thought it clearly La Tâche, but Jeremy and I settled on 2004. This was slightly green, not particularly ripe or powerful. Nothing like this wine has ever tasted in the past, and while 1996s frustratingly go through cyclical ups and downs, I am unable to explain this wine's performance at all tonight. Bottle was from the original owner, purchased on release.

Flight 3 - La Tâche and a bonus Musigny (3 Notes)

  • 1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Served blind in final LT+ flight. Very stemmy, easily identified as La Tâche, but slightly stewy and tired. Inconsistent with how this wine has showed from 3-5 recent bottles in the past few years.

  • 1990 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Served blind from magnum in our final LT+ flight. By far the best this wine has ever tasted for me. Lots of ripe red cherry on nose and palate that starts off elegance and finessed, then finishes with power. Very fresh for its age. Incredible length. At a perfect place right now.

There was one glass left in the magnum, which I took back to the hotel. Much more tired, much less interesting the next afternoon.

  • 1978 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Served blind in final LT+ flight. 4.5 cm ullage. Great spice, nicely mature red cherry and berry with earth. Best when first poured, slightly shorter 30 minutes later. From same source an another bottle I brought to this same dinner one year ago, but that bottle had 2 cm ullage, and tonight's bottle was shipped cross-country 5 days before dinner.
