Introduction

We all brought a bottle or contributed an amount. We knew the theme was Pauillac of course, but not which wines the others brought. Also not when the wine we brought was poured. All wines were tasted blind.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Château Lynch-Moussas 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Beautiful dark fruits in the bouquet, some spiciness and vanilla as well. On the palate dark as well as red fruits, some bell peppers, graphite, ok acidity and sticky tannin. Evolves in the glass. Very youthful of course, but also remarkably approachable.

  • 2003 Château Pontet-Canet 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

One tasting note for both the 2003 and 2004. Beautiful bouquet with dark forest fruits, graphite, cedar, tobacco and licorice. In the bouquet the 2003 showed a little more sweetness. On the palate the 2003 was the most concentrated with beautiful dark fruit juice, sweet spices, firm but good acidity and still youthful and round tannin. The 2004 was just a little leaner and elegant and also very juicy. The bitterness showed a bit more and the finish was a bit shorter compared to the 2003. Both wines are still in their youth. My scores are not extremely high, possibly because the wines needed more air time. 2003 - 94, 2004 - 92.

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 1998 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Blood red with a carmine rim. Beautiful and complex bouquet with cassis, graphite, cedar and tobacco. On the palate round, soft and creamy dark fruits, cassis again and graphite. Firm acidity and bitterness. The tannin is soft and still has some bite. The finish is a bit short, but this is a classy wine. Ready now and the next few years.

  • 1998 Château Lynch-Moussas 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Fairly light garnet red. In the bouquet herbs and some bell pepper. Same on the palate. Some figs and dates. The tannin is soft and completely melted. Not really concentrated. Still ok, but drink up.

  • 1999 Château Pontet-Canet 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Concentrated bouquet with at first a touch of barnyard followed by ripe cassis, licorice and graphite and beautiful oak. On the palate also a good concentration and wine spreading through the mouth with cassis, firm but good acidity, bitterness and tannin with still a good bite. Evolves for the better in the glass. Beautiful wine.

  • 1996 Hauts de Pontet-Canet 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Beautiful bouquet with cassis, smoke and a touch of barnyard. On the palate creamy ripe black forest fruits, cassis, sweet licorice and sweet spices. Beautifully round and soft tannin. This wine is in a perfect drinking stage now. Lovely wine and surprised of the quality of this second label.

  • 1996 Château Haut-Batailley 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Beautiful bouquet with ripe cassis, smoke, cedar, tobacco and a touch of barnyard. On the palate a beautiful and classical wine with cassis, some bell pepper, smoke and creamy tannin with still a pleasant bite. Beautiful drinking stage now. No real hurry, but not many reasons to wait any longer.

  • 1996 Château Pontet-Canet 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Beautiful perfumed bouquet with cassis, smoke, cedar and graphite. On the palate a meaty wine with a lot of cassis bell pepper and still youthful tannin. Good acidity. A bit creamy as well. Great length. This wine is still in its early maturity stage and needs more time to show what it really has in store. I would wait until 2018 - 2020 at least. 92++ - 93+ for today.

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 1979 La Rose Pauillac

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Creamy and mature bouquet with also some plum marmalade. On the palate the same impressions. Ripe, mature and a bit organic and barnyard. Firm acidity and soft tannin and some length. Too old yes, but also still very much alive. What a surprise! I did not score the wine.

  • 1970 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very special bouquet with concentrated coffee aromas, asphalt, tar and some currants. On the palate chocolate, tar and boiled plums. Ok acidity. Still drinkable, but very mature. No score.
