Monthly Tasting Group HWS #037; Austria: Riesling

Every participant had to bring a wine of the theme. We did not know which wines were brought by the others. All wines were tasted blind, also without knowing when the wine you brought was poured.

  Expressive bouquet. Dry and fresh with citrus, minerals, pear and some lychee. Friendly wine.

• 2007 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Riesling Terrassen Kamptal 85 Points

  Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

  The bouquet is somewhat closed. On the palate dry with a firm amount of citrus acidity and green apples, minerals and flint stone. A lot of acidity in the finish as well. Good wine.

• 2007 Summerer Riesling Vom Urgestein 83 Points

  Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

  Slightly sweet impressions in the start although the wine is dry. Full bodied, pleasant citrus, some tropical flavors, pear, lychee and pineapple. Pleasant and basic Riesling, above supermarket quality.

  Still quite closed. Medium to full bodied. A lot of citrus and green apples. Minerals. Well structured basic wine.

• 2006 Jurtschitsch Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein 87 Points

  Somewhat tropical bouquet. A little bit spritzig in the start. Quite full bodied with good citrus and a lot of tropical fruits. Also some pleasant bitterness. Tasteful and aromatic wine which lacks a bit in acidity.

  A little bit spritzig in the start. Very well made wine. Lean but very tasteful Good citrus and a lot of minerals. Complex wine. Harmonious.

  The bouquet is a bit locked. Refined taste with pleasant citrus and tropical impressions. Very tasteful. Good extraction. Minerals, flint stone, pear and peach. Complex wine with a long finish.

• 2005 Loimer Riesling Steinmassl 86 Points

  Very ripe bouquet with some petrol. Light barnyard smells. Banana, resin, wool. Already quite mature. A special wine with a special taste. The wine probably is at full maturity now.

  Expressive perfumed bouquet. On the palate good and soft citrus acidity. A hint of sweetness and tropical fruits. A pleaser. Has enough acidity which all together makes it an excellent wine.

  Interesting and complex bouquet with citrus and tropical fruits like bananas. Full bodied and concentrated, very tasteful wine. Pineapple, banana, good citrus, ok bitterness, ripe fruits, long finish.

• 2001 Grande Maison Monbazillac Cuvée des Monstres 93 Points

  France, Southwest France, Dordogne, Monbazillac

  Botrytis, honey, apricot, caramel and a lot of other sweet tropical flavors. Extremely concentrated. Good sweetness and acidity. Not as complex and elegant as d'Yquem, but this really is something special.
