A wonderful surprise. This was in a great drinking place, with totally resolved tannins to frame a mature flavor profile of dried dark fruits, leather and earth. Soft, aromatic and well balanced, although the finish could have been a bit longer.

An interesting Zin that has aged into a claret-like wine. Cedar, vanilla, dried red fruits and herbs. Soft and creamy on the palate and a bit short on the end, but this gets lots of points for the range of flavors produced.

My last of two bottles and what a wonderful showing. Much smoother and layered than my first bottle about 13 years ago. A complete wine that provided loads of pleasure. Mature but still packing power, with smoky red fruits, spice, garrigue, leather, tar and game... the flavors just kept pumping out at me. A great, aromatic, savory showing and a wine that might still have more gas in the tank. Wow. Red wine of the night.

I loved the texture of this wine, crackling, crisp and svelte. Plump red fruits, but well chiseled with edgy structure. Perfumed nose of roses, with iron and herbs mixed in. Although youthful and un-evolved, this was accessible and a pleasure to drink. Surely this will get better in the coming decades.

After some bad experiences (due to deteriorating corks) with some Colares that were over 90 years old, it was nice to taste a mature Colares where the cork has kept this long-lived wine intact. A cornucopia of scents here, like perfumed red roses, potpourri, dried plums, iron, leather and a hint of balsamic. Sharp acids keeps this quietly lively on the palate. This reminded me of a cross between a mature Burgundy and a Nebbiolo. Delicious and distinctive.

A nice aged Bordeaux with all the classic notes you would expect: dried currants, cedar, cigar box and earth. Soft and velvety on the palate but a bit more flesh would have bumped this into another level.

A lovely, elegant, red-fruited wine that showed wonderful lift and transparency. Bright, crunchy and bouncy on the palate.

This, somewhat darkish yellow wine, presented quite of bit of rich, honeyed botrytis, with tropical notes of pineapple, apricots and peaches. But for all it's weight, it retained balance with adequate acidity and a hint of slate. Sappy, juicy and delicious... Quite nice.

What a stunning Riesling, completely saturating the palate with sappy peaches, mangos, flowers and minerals. What stands out here is the classic 2001 profile of perfectly ripe fruit with stunning acids. The length here was crazy, painting the palate with a kaleidoscope of persistent flavors. White wine of the night, by far.

NV Grongnet Champagne Carpe Diem Extra brut 92 Points
France, Champagne
A deep wine that shows a nice combination of fresh citrus and mature nutty notes. The toast and nuts add complexity, without veering towards an overly oxidative mushroom area. Very fine mouth feel. Aged three years in barrel and then three years in bottle with the lees (under cork).

2008 Marie-Noëlle Ledru Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée du Goulté Blanc de Noirs Brut 92 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Superb wine that shows a racy, mineral character with a bit of doughy biscuit. Very elegant, poised and filigree on the palate with excellent length.

NV Georges Laval Champagne Premier Cru Rose Brut Nature Cumières Flawed

Attenuated node and a slight mustiness on the finish. With time, this proved to be corked.

2013 von Winning Sauvignon Blanc I 90 Points
Germany, Pfalz
A very nice Sauvignon Blanc, but you have to deal with the oak, which adds roundness and richness without being overtly toasted. This comes across as a rich Pouilly Fume and a (oak-aged) Chablis, with its minerality and cut. Floral, yellow fruits and ginger notes appear, with tangy cling on the finish. The acids come in late, but they do come in to balance the richness.
