Community Tasting Notes (9) Avg Score: 97 points

  • I finally get to try this wine after searching for 9 years since reading the MFW 100 point review.

Very good bottle of semi-sweet riesling. Still quite sweet, also high acidity. Seems not fully integrated yet, and I will leave remaining bottles for some time to see what happens. Less concentrated than I would have expected.
    Score: 93, but with potential.

  • AP 14 01 (more on this later). Holy god. Reading reviews I was anticipating a fantastic wine, but this was far beyond anything I’d imagined possible! Completely transcending the realm of Riesling and I’m still giggling as I think about how truly sensational this was. Although 17 years old now, just a hint of diesel on the nose was all the gave away its age. Hard to describe the flavors in any way that gives it justice - full and ripe with the concentration and length of flavors you usually find in a beerenauslese, but truly Spätlese in form. In spite of the prism of flavors it was light, nimble, and almost effervescent. I am so grateful to have had this experience! 100p any day by any metrics.

Short admin note - as my label upload confirms, this was labeled 2001, a 2002 VDP auction sticker, but sported an AP number of 14 01 (should have been 14 02). Talking to Jean Fisch and Davis Rayer of Mosel Fine Wines, they confirmed through Oliver Haag that this typo was printed on some of the bottles and discovered late in the label run. So genuine bottles of this wine may sport a label showing the AP number of either 14 01 or 14 02.

  • Varied and eclectic wines at Salil's (Vernon, CT): What a stunning Riesling, completely saturating the palate with sappy peaches, mangos, flowers and minerals. What stands out here is the classic 2001 profile of perfectly ripe fruit with stunning acids. The length here was crazy, painting the palate with a kaleidoscope of persistent flavors. White wine of the night, by far.

  • Wines that didn't suck (Vernon, CT): I needed an hour with a tropical botanist's dictionary to identify everything on the nose: guava, lychee, mango, pineapple, exotic citrus. Excellent acidity, weightless richness (how?), and a long long finish. YUM!
