Introduction

We knew the theme, but all wines were tasted blind.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1998 Château Rolland-Maillet 86 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Mature bouquet with some creamy dark fruits and some oaky flavors. On the palate mainly red juicy fruits, some autumn impressions, good acidity and soft tannin. Mature wine and a bit short in the finish. Still drinking nicely.

  • 2001 Château Rolland-Maillet 86 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Pleasant bouquet with some barnyard, dark forest fruits, tobacco and vanilla. On the palate a mature wine with still juicy red berry fruits and a firm amount of acidity. Ok wine, but nothing really special. Ready now.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2004 Château Menaut Collectif des Barriques 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

The bouquet is not very expressive, but there are some creamy impressions, red fruits and vanilla. On the palate a creamy start, red berry fruits, ok acidity and a touch of sweetness. Some chocolate. A bit thin. Light bodied, but pleasurable wine.

  • 1998 Château Cissac La Coupe de Vignerons Collectif du Barriques

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Not so very expressive bouquet with some cassis and vanilla. On the palate the wine shows some flaws and seems to be slightly corked. There are barnyard impressions, some earth, red fruits, vanilla, and slightly sticky tannin. No score for tonight, but I think that if this was a perfect bottle I would probably score it 86 or 87.

  • 2000 La Coupe des Vignerons Collectif de Barriques 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lussac-St. Émilion

Some barnyard impressions in the bouquet. On the palate creamy, soft and round. Red as well as dark berry fruits. Pleasant acidity which gives the wine good freshness. A nice wine and ready now. At its peak now and the next two years or so.

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 2001 Château Giscours 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

This bottle showed better than the one I tasted in 2012. My blind note, only knowing it was a Bordeaux: Beautiful bouquet with dark fruits like cassis, beautiful oak and some tobacco. On the palate beautiful dark berry fruits as well, beautiful oak, some coffee and spreading through the mouth. Firm acidity and slightly sticky tannin. The wine is ready now and really lovely. Has a future until at least 2017. 90 – 91, but I score it 90 for tonight.

  • 2000 Château Poujeaux 89 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

Round and creamy bouquet with dark fruits and beautiful oak. On the palate good dark and red berry fruits, some coffee, quite much acidity and melted tannin. Fairly light bodied and certainly for a 2000. I am a fan of this domain, but considering the vintage this wine disappoints at the moment. Have a few bottles myself, so there will be a follow up. 89 for tonight.

  • 2006 Château du Domaine de L'Eglise 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Beautiful bouquet with dark forest fruits, vanilla and beautiful oak. On the palate dark and red berry fruits, vanilla, some chocolate, good acidity and soft tannin. Full bodied, soft and friendly wine. Early maturity now and certainly a pleasure until 2018+ 90-91

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Château Gazin Pomerol 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Extraordinary beautiful bouquet with concentrated and soft black forest fruits and beautiful oak and sweet spices. On the palate full bodied, soft, friendly and lush. Beautiful red and dark berry fruits, chocolate and beautiful oak. Great balance. Soft tannin with still a good future. Already a delicious wine and certainly well into the 2020’s. 93+ is a good score.

  • 2002 Château Lafon-Rochet 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Beautiful bouquet with cassis and other dark forest fruits and good oak. On the palate good cassis, some chocolate, vanilla and good acidity and tannin with still a pleasant bite. Ready now and no real hurry. Not one of the greatest, but certainly a very good effort for this off vintage. 89 - 90

  • 2002 Château Gruaud Larose 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Beautiful barnyard and cassis in the bouquet. Good oak as well. On the palate dark and red berry fruits and focused. Firm acidity and tannin. The wine has a good length. Certainly very ok, but for 2nd Grand Cru Classé a little disappointing. Still has a future of several years, so maybe everything will fall into place in a few years. Not sure. 89 – 90 for today.

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

  • 2000 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

The bouquet tells it all: Beautiful wine! Cassis, cedar, luxurious oak, coffee, tobacco. Great! Everything comes back on the palate, beautiful acidity and tannin as well with still a pleasant bite. The wine is completely ready now and will offer great drinking between now and 2018 or 2019. 92 or 93?

  • 1998 Château Margaux 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Concentrated and lush dark forest fruits with beautifully hidden oak. On the palate creamy dark forest fruits, very concentrated with a beautiful balance between some sweetness and acidity. The tannin is ripe, soft and round. The wine is in its maturity stage now and will probably stay there for many years. Until 2020 will not be a problem. Would love to taste it again by then.

  • 1996 Château Pavie 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Not so many descriptive notes. Beautiful, complex and mature bouquet. On the palate chocolate, beautiful acidity and mature and soft tannin. Medium bodied and elegant. A really refined wine at its peak and the end of its maturity stage. Drink now or ultimately in 2016. I loved it.
