Introduction

We get 10 wines in 10 glasses. All wines of a different varietal or blend and from a different location. We have to tell in approx 1 hour where the wine is produced and of which varietal or traditional blend, the vintage and as many details as we can give. For big ego’s this is the ultimate way to land with both feet on the ground and become humble again ;-) ;-)!

  • 2011 Pascal Brunet Fleurie 83 Points

  • 2007 Domaine de Ferrand Châteauneuf-du-Pape 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Blood red. Ripe red as well as black forest fruits in the bouquet. On the palate a concentrated wine with mainly red fruits, some white pepper and some chocolate. Ok acidity and soft tannin. Revealing this was a C9duP Ferrand was a disappointment. It was so lush when it was really young, but now it is just a good wine. Will more ageing give any improvement….? Not sure… I have a few, so there will be a follow up.

  • 2010 Ronan by Clinet 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux

Dark red. Creamy dark cherries in the bouquet. On the palate cherries as well, white pepper, vanilla and sweet spices. Not so very much sweetness, ok acidity and some sticky tannin. Overall an ok wine which lacks luxury and finesse.

  • 1997 Grangehurst Cabernet Sauvignon Cape Winemakers Guild 89 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

Dark carmine red. In the bouquet ripe and sweet blackberries. On the palate good oak and fruit juice. Tobacco, sweet spices and tannin with still a good bite. The bouquet suggests it is a new world wine, but on the palate it could almost be old world. Really good wine. Ready now but no hurry.

  • 2004 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino 90 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

This is a completely blind note and after seeing what it was I really have my doubts about this wine. The wine is beautiful still, but there are some reductive flavors in the bouquet. Ripe fruits, sweet spices, oak and some farmyard smells as well. On the palate chocolate, spiciness and a firm amount of sweetness and acidity and soft tannin. Since my TN of March last year the wine has developed really fast. Some of the group thought it was too old already and to be honest; I wonder if there is any room for improvement. Still a nice wine and tonight I scored it 89 - 90.

  • 2011 Bodegas Borsao Campo de Borja Joven Selección 82 Points

    Spain, Aragón, Campo de Borja

Purple red color and a Gamay like bouquet. On the palate there is more bite than in most Beaujolais wines, but the very primary fruit impressions are also there. Ok, basic wine.

  • 2008 Wijndomein St. Martinus Cuvée Villare Wijngaard Villare 86 Points

    Netherlands, Limburg, Vaals

Deep dark purple red. Dark and reticent bouquet with some pepper. Same on the palate. Concentrated. Firm tannin and bitterness. Not really refined, but certainly an ok wine with maybe just a little overdose of acidity.
