Introduction

Everyone brought one or more bottles for the others to taste blind.
I don't remember if we made flights. When a participant brought more than one bottle, we probably did taste those wines together.

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 1976 Labaume Aine & Fils Fleurie

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

Barnyard, high acidity and organic flavors in the bouquet. On the palate coffee, tea, rust, tobacco and cinnamon. A lot of acidity. Not completely undrinkable, but this wine is much too old.

  • 1974 Labaume Aine & Fils Beaune

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune

The bouquet is rustic and shows barnyard, but also still some red fruits and leather. Not really unpleasant. On the palate however the wine is very tertiary with coffee, tea, chocolate and mocha. The acidity is ok, but overall the wine is too tertiary and too old. No score.

  • 2011 Georges Dubœuf Fleurie

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

Cherries and strawberries in the bouquet. On the palate cherries, some bell pepper, a lot of acidity and green, somewhat harsh tannin. Not really a pleasurable wine.

Transparent garnet red. In the bouquet earth, mushrooms, forest floor, mint and spiciness. On the palate juicy and firm dark cherries, earth, iron and other minerals. Also some toast and coffee as well as some licorice. Good acidity and friendly tannin. The wine is completely ready now, but no real hurry; it will last another few years.

In the bouquet black berries like cassis, licorice, sweet spices, some autumn impressions as well as some ok barnyard. On the palate firm cherries and dark berries, sweet spices, chocolate, forest floor a firm amount of acidity and still sticky tannin. Harmonious, slightly mature wine and really nice. • 2007 Château Montus Madiran 88 Points

    France, Southwest France, Madiran

The bouquet shows some development; ripe dark forest fruits, a bit rustic and also some green bell peppers. On the palate black and red berries, cherries, bell pepper, dark chocolate, ok acidity, some bitterness and sticky tannin. Not everybody's friend. Firm wine and a typical Madiran Tannat. Wait until 2020+; then the wine will have softened and will be really nice. For tonight 88+.

  • 2003 Château du Cèdre Cahors Le Cèdre 89 Points

    France, Southwest France, Cahors

This bottle showed a little less complex than the one I tasted 2½ years ago. In the bouquet a lot of dark forest fruits and vanilla. Same on the palate. The oak is of good quality. There is something green and vegetal as well. Good acidity, a touch of sweetness and firm tannin. The wine might have entered a dumb phase. Wait a few years. Until 2018 or so. 88 – 89+ for tonight

  • 1990 Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Prestige des Hautes Garrigues

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

In the bouquet tea, leather rust and celery. On the palate a very mature wine with chocolate, chamomile tea, a lot of sweet spiciness, ok acidity and also a firm dose of sweetness. The tannin is completely melted. The wine is still drinkable and even a pleasure, but in fact too old now. Should have been drunk 5 years ago. No score.

  • 2004 Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon Franschhoek 90 Points

South Africa, Coastal Region, Franschhoek Valley

In the bouquet a beautiful and mature wine with dark and red forest fruits and sweet spices. Same on the palate. A firm amount of sweetness balance by good acidity and silky soft tannin. The wine is completely ready now. Probably best to drink it over the next two years.
