Introduction

In general the formula here is that the host sets a theme and every participant brings a wine of the theme. The host puts a few extra on the table. We taste all wines blind, knowing our own wines. We first taste a little bit in a random order. Then we decide together in which order the wines will be tasted again and after that reveal which wine it is. In this group we do not use spittoons, so the number of bottles is limited. We don’t empty the bottles, but leave the leftovers for the host to taste again the next day, or take home the bottle we brought.

On this occasion a few extra people were invited, so there were a few more bottles. Unfortunately a sweet wine lover finished the Suduiraut before I could have a second taste.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2002 Château Pontet-Canet 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Beautiful bouquet with cassis, some red berries and luxurious oak. Beautiful cassis on the palate, just a hint of pleasant sweetness as well. Soft and good tannin. For 2002 full bodied and round with firm but good bitterness and acidity. Young adult stage now. Lacks the luxury of the great vintages. Will offer pleasant drinking from now to 2016 or even a bit longer.

  • 2002 Château L'Eglise-Clinet 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

A little bit earthy in the bouquet. Black fruits as well. On the palate black fruits like cassis, also laurel. The tannin is still very tight and there is a lot of good bitterness. The wine is still very youthful and needs more cellar time. Give it another 3 - 4 years at least. For a 2002 this is an impressive effort! 90+

  • 2003 La Croix du Merle 86 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Creamy in the bouquet as well as the taste. Red fruits. Some sweetness. Soft tannin. Ready now. Will stay on this level for a few years.

  • 2004 Château Saint-Pierre 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Beautiful and exclusive bouquet with toasted oak and cassis. On the palate beautiful and soft cassis and other black berry fruits. Soft but still firm tannin and good acidity. Really beautiful and harmonious and a pleasant surprise this was a 2004. Given enough air already very enjoyable and certainly for the next 5+ years.

  • 2002 Château Léoville Poyferré 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Classical bouquet with pleasant and beautiful oak, but the cassis and black cherries prevail. Sweet start with ripe black forest fruits. Firm and round tannin. Pleasant acidity. Elegant acidity and complex. What a great effort for the vintage. Young maturity now and a great pleasure when decanted well before. Or store it for another 5+ years; no problem.

  • 2004 Château Vray Croix de Gay 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Beautiful and friendly bouquet with good oak. Red as well as black fruits, some liquorice and lead pencil. Soft tannin and acidity. Spreading through the mouth and a pleasant medium long finish. Young maturity stage at the moment and definitely still nice in 4 - 5 years from now. The drinking window in CT as it is now; until 2027 strikes me as a bit odd.

  • 2009 Penfolds Chardonnay Koonunga Hill 86 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Quite much oak in the bouquet. On the palate good soft tropical flavors and citrus. The fruit can handle the oak, and the wine probably needs some more time so it all integrates a bit more.

  • 2001 Château Suduiraut

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

This wine was served much too cold. It was just ok at first with caramel in the bouquet. Apple acidity, apricots and pineapple on the palate. Full bodied and a lot of freshness. Later and warmer it showed its complexity with an abundance of new tastes like honey, polishing wax etc. etc. Unfortunately the bottle was empty by then. For the CT/GS community; do yourself a favor and do not start drinking this wine colder than 57°F/14°C. While getting a little warmer it will only give more.
