Flight 1 - Starters (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - Main Event (9 Notes)

  • 1986 Château Gruaud Larose 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Deep dense garnet, slight bricking though still very youthful in appearance; green pepper, cigar, very Bordeaux, red currant, a bit rusty, clay, cedar, earth; stoney on the palate, silky texture, noble, good red fruit, fine tannin, Scotch barrel, still firmer structure; a bit rustic in its nobility I called '85 Latour; delicious.

  • 1996 Château Mouton Rothschild 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Darker core with brighter crimson rim; sweet red fruit, currant, raspberry, menthol, iron, cigar, earth, green pepper, sweet leather; fresh on the palate, younger than last wine, juicy, dense, iron fist in velvet glove, tightly wound though good finesse today; great potential, very fresh example; 96+.

  • 1990 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Dark core with brick rim, sediment; raspberry, ripe fruit, almost showing some volitility, dusty, chocolate; raisins, super ripe fruit compared to the earlier Bordeaux, age, sappy, cranberry mixed with blueberry, rosemary, herbs, fruit is a bit stewy, mineral, tart, firm tannin; was on Hommage.

  • 1994 Château Haut-Brion 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Deep maroon, some clarity, crimson rim; great nose, red currant, a hint of pine, green pepper, sandalwood, cedar, sandy, complex though a bit leaner when considering earlier wines; stanky, sweet, sappy, not multi layered, love the acid structure and overall drinkability; for as much as I enjoyed this I was not on 1st growth.

  • 1982 Château Certan de May 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Fine sediment, deeper core, large brick rim, still some youth showing through; roses, orange peel, ash, elegant nose, hard red fruit, sweet; resolved acid on the palate, red fruit, sandalwood, good purity and focus; beautiful, I will second the nod to charming.

  • 2000 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Maroon core with lighter rim, some clarity; high toned nose, incense, spice, pomegranate, cherry, violets, roses, red fruit with a darker edge, French oak still there a bit; nice focus on the palate, fruit, tapenade, firm, good density, cedar, juicy acid but firm structure; was on Cote Rotie; still quite youthful.

  • 1999 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Crimson color, lots of clarity, light rim; oh yeah- that's Rayas!, called it in less than 2 seconds, unmistakeable and unique, vegetal, rhubarb, celery, cranberry, wild, leather; softer texture, fresh, Burg-like, sweeter and sappy, aged and somewhat resolved; so Rayas, called '99-'00; won the tasting though not my WOTN.

  • 1995 Mongeard-Mugneret Richebourg 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Cloudy, orange rim; orange peel, sour fruit, sweaty, leather, slight candied quality, rusty, showing good density; sour fruit, darker cherry, plum, candy cane, nice texture; shows depth of Grand Cru fruit but this is aged and wine is a little awkward though still a good drink.

  • 2007 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Black core with thin maroon rim; dark fruit, dense and brooding on the nose, chocolate, green, whole cluster definitely comes through, some oak; silky initially on the palate, dense, firm tannin kicks in after, roasted fruit, serious, bacon fat, a little rustic though lots of polish; super young, let these sit for another 10, very different from the La Turque and La Mouline from same vintage.
