A tale of two wines. Without food this was just brutally dry with ripping acids. With food the wine was tamed and more civilized (in particular deep fried scallops did the trick nicely). Medium nose with white fruit and mineral. Palate has apples with notions of biscuit crumbs. A well-made example, but not my preferred style of bubbly.
Pale ruby to rose in color. Full bold nose of sweet red berries, florals and spice. Palate is Cap'n Crunch crunchberries all day long. Even finishes with a yeasty/cereal note. Kind of one note, simple and a bit weird.
Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Valle Isarco / Eisacktaler
Full bright aromatics of melons, tropical fruit, fresh-but herb, and spice. Chiseled and precise on the palate with lift and a taut personality. Love the snappy acids here. Good stuff on it's own and with food.
This wine, as usual, is on another level. There's an incredible depth of flavor, richness and concentration to the wine, which you just don't generally find in Sauvignon. Good underlying acid that keeps it fresh and persistent. A stunner.
France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières-Coulée de Serrant
Golden color. In an oxidative style that's not my favorite but that I can appreciate. Layered with complexity/depth. Medium acidity with a honeyed/waxy profile. Clipped finish.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Wow, terrific full soaring nose of rich yellow fruit and minerals. Palate is fat, weighty and mineral-laden. Baked apples, spice. Tangy acids. Really speaks well to Meursault character.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Full, dense meaty nose has aged red fruit, earth and forrest floor. The meatiness brings to mind Syrah -- which is likely blended into this wine. The palate has good fruit and plenty of life. Same meaty character. An odd metallic note emerges on the mid-palate and lingers, which really stains an otherwise interesting wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Full, lifted and persistent nose of black and red cherry with florals and spice. Palate has juicy red berries that strike a great balance of sweet and spicy. Energetic and persistent. With a brightness from the acid that carries into a long finish. This is delicious and very easy to drink.
Wow, big concentrated nose has black cherry, tobacco leaf, bell pepper, cigar ash and earth. The aromatics are deliciously complex. Palate follows suit with terrific concentration and moderate acid that provides lift and persistence. Delicious earth/tobacco complexity. A gorgeous Cab Franc!
A deep dark ruby -- great color for a near 60 year old wine. The nose is moderate with red fruit that is slightly caramelized and herb/earth tones behind the fruit. Wow, the palate here is very impressive with fruit that is still round, plush and sweet. Tannins are resolved. Acid is still present and kicking. The finish has great length and perfume. Awesome stuff.
Full nose of high toned sweet cherry aromas. Palate is light bodied with sweet cherry fruit, medicinal herbs and spice. Good power for such a light-bodied wine. Fresh finish.
France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru
Full nose of sweet honeyed pear and apple fruit. Good acidity and brightness on the palate cuts the ripe, sweet profile. Good balance and length. No over-heated or over-ripe notes you might expect with a 2003.
