Introduction

Catching up with the old Project guys on Thursday 15th and, as is the norm, they're getting the food and I'm sourcing the wine. As the general consensus was for duck I will be all predictable and drag out some Pinot. Consequently I decided to run though a few to see what was in a good spot for drinking now.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 1993 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

From Coravin. Muted red berry fruit, earth, very slight sous bois but nose is not a massive indicator of it's age. With the time the fruit gets a little sour and a slight mustiness is evident though. Flavours of red currant and spice with gently drying tannic grip in the mid palate and front of the mouth Travels long on the finish. Okay.

  • 2006 Lucien Le Moine Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

From Coravin. Biscuit, black berry, mutes sweet spice and cream and a slight dustiness. In the mouth its blackberry fruit and hefty drying tannins on the font of the palate. Fruit just about persist beneath this. Hmm. It's quite tough at the moment.

  • 2007 Antica Terra Pinot Noir

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

From Coravin. Slight burnt stalk note over cherry, sweet spice and leather. More generous on the palate with cherry, slight burnt coffee and some stalks. Tannins are just about present but pretty much resolved. Nice but probably drink up for me.

  • 2009 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

From Coravin. Muted dark berry fruit , wet earth, slight farmyard - a touch rustic and none the worse for that. In the mouth it's juicy, fleshy with black fruits. Wet and welcoming. Tannins are talc textured and support rather than dominate the fruit. Pleasant and quaffable.

  • 2011 Nicolas Rossignol Pommard Les Vignots

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard

From Coravin. slightly peppery with plummy hints. Also a slight nail varnish/glue note here as well. With agitation the fruit steps up to the plate a little more. Tis fruit is, though, a little sour on the palate, the tannins are quite drying. It's a bit short as well. I remember this wine being better than this though it may just be struggling in this line up a bit with more overtly ripe and/or bulky wines.

  • 2012 Knipser Spätburgunder Kalkmergel

    Germany, Pfalz

From Coravin. Biscuit, toasted red berry compote, touch of herbaceousness and earthy elements backed by sweet spice. Quite a rich bouquet. More of the same on the palate. Quite spicy here as well. Pleasing in an over oaked slightly over done way...hmm, that might not be completely fair. It is quite moreish.

  • 2012 Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette Valley

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

From Coravin. Red cherry but underpinned by sweet spice and a slight menthol note. Also some cream and biscuit. It's a little flat on the palate with slight red cherry and biscuit, but quite dilute. Disappointing

And choices made…the Antica Terra and the Knipser and, probably, the Elk Cove…or the Girardin…
