VDP-Riesling-presentation

As we have been to the presentation of the VDP for some years now, I like to introduce some of my short TN here on CT. Note: as this is the first semi-public showing of the young GG they are all very fresh and somehow unapproachable.
I have divided the TN into two flights, in the first flight there are some TN of my beloved Nahe region, in the second flight some TN from other regions.
And because this fine stuff at that moment is this very young I will not score it, just give my opinion of the potencial!

• 2015 Dönnhoff Hermannshöhle Riesling Großes Gewächs

  On the very mineralic side of Riesling, nearly no fruit, dense, its all about slate, superb texture, ending very long, for the next decade(s), (*****), 92-96+

  fine tropical fruit, gentle touch, more silky as the other 3 GG of Dönnhoff, will open up first, **(**+-?), 92-94+

• 2015 Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen Riesling Großes Gewächs

  enormous fruit driven showing, maracuja, jelly bears, llychee, very good texture during the first presentation of this wine for the public, very dry, long, will please young, **(**), 91-93+

• 2015 Joh. Bapt. Schāfer Goldloch Riesling Großes Gewächs

  One bottle which shows silky fruit aromas, first of all lemon, more tropical fruits, very balanced and gentle texture, fine long finish, *(***), 91- 93+

• 2015 Joh. Bapt. Schāfer Dorsheimer Pittermännchen Riesling Großes Gewächs

  Very unevolved appearance, only some lemon cest, the rest is mineralic driven, wet stones, enormous acidic bite, ending long, has to evolve for 3-5+ years, *(**+), 89- 91+

• 2015 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Großes Gewächs Auction

  Germany, Nahe

  First dry Riesling from the Oberhäuser Brücke since 1998, very different from the 3 wellknown others, this one is all about herb garden, fine texture on the midpalate, bonedry though, needs at least 5+ years to evaluate, *(***+), 92-94+

• 2015 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Großes Gewächs

  Beneath Hermannshöhle and Hubacker one of the GG for the very long run, starting with lots of aromas from the spontaneous fermentation, nearly unapproachable in this condition, salty, mineralic, slate, lots of potencial, wait at least 5-10 years for a first try, (*****+), 94-98++

• 2015 Weingut Pfeffingen Ungsteiner Herrenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs

  Germany, Pfalz

  One of the best estates from the Pfalz, this year very fullbodied with high ABV 14,5%, but well integrated and balanced, chalky from the soil, a persistent wine with a long finish, wait 3+years, *(**+), 89-91+

• 2015 Weingut Pfeffingen Ungsteiner Weilberg Riesling Großes Gewächs

  Germany, Pfalz

  strong fruit fragrance, very persistent and fullbodied, high ABV 14,5%, very harmonic and balanced, ripe peaches, mineralic, long+ finish, delicious now but will benefit from futher (5-10+ years) cellaring, **(**+), 91-94+

  For me nearly always the best GG from the Pfalz, stonefruit, some ripe peaches, very layered with mineralic, herbal and fruity aromas, vibrating acidity, enormous energetic texture ending very long, for the next decade(s), **(***), 93-97+

• 2015 Schloss Lieser Niederberg Helden Riesling Großes Gewächs

  For me always the most complex GG from Lieser, more on the mineral side of Riesling, balanced and dense body, fresh with wet stones, some herbs, savoury tangy taste, ending very long, for the long run, *(***+-*), 92-96

• 2015 Wittmann La Borne Riesling Alte Reben

  Germany, Rheinhessen

  I tried this auction wine for the very first time, this has an enormous concentration, perfumed bouquet with ripe stonefruit and on the other hand a delicate herbal and mineralic appearance, quite balanced with high endurance on the palate, the price is high compared to other dry high end Riesling, but it is a stunning wine, for decade(s), *(****), 93- 97+

We went there with two of our wine loving group from Hamburg. We both do not understand the great hype this vintage has triggered in public. Yes, there a some impressive GG of the 2015 vintage, but we do prefer classic vintages like in former years. On the other hand there are a lot of great Riesling beginner wines of this 2015 vintage. Try it out!
