Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2004 Lucien Le Moine Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

In a flight of 04/06/08. The most advanced of the three wines by a margin. Shows mature apple and nutty notes. Holding on just fine, but on the back nine. I think I would have preferred this a few years ago.

  • 2006 Lucien Le Moine Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

In a flight of 04/06/08. Full nose is very perfumed. Palate is in a great place -- round and lush apple fruit with good fresh acids. Sexy mouthfeel. I really enjoyed this and it seems to be in an ideal window. Best in 20 years, according to Mounir.

  • 2008 Lucien Le Moine Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

In a flight of 04/06/08. I ever-so-slightly preferred this to the 08. Both wines had a lot in common the 08 just brought an extra gear of acidic energy and intensity. Lots of florals interwoven with the orchard fruit. Bright and intense finish.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2013 Lucien Le Moine Chevalier-Montrachet 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

A smoking big nose that has gorgeous concentrated layer after layer -- white fruits, spice, mineral -- it's all there. The palate is an incredible combination of concentration and precision. Like the nose, there is so much depth and layering in the flavors. Balanced on a razor's edge. A stunner.

  • 1999 Lucien Le Moine Bonnes Mares 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

In a flight of 99/02/06. The nose here is brooding and bit muted with lots of non-delineated herby black cherry. Palate is rich and deep with lots of black cherry that is exuberant and fresh. Good, but in the context of the vineyard, vintage and flight that was just okay.

  • 2002 Lucien Le Moine Bonnes Mares 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

In a flight of 99/02/06. A stunning wine and in my top three tonight. Spectacular booming aromas are both generous and complex. A palate on tilt -- so rich and yet so fresh and detailed. Tons of depth, layering and complexity with red and black fruits, herbs, florals, meatiness and spice. Muscular bit still quite precise. A wine that has it all. Wow.

  • 2006 Lucien Le Moine Bonnes Mares 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

In a flight of 99/02/06. Relative to the spectacular 02 this is more reserved but on it's own right it features an attractive, full nose of red cherries and spices. The palate is simply lithe with modest richness that is in perfect harmony with underlying freshness. A bright and focused Bonnes Mares.

  • 2002 Lucien Le Moine Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

In a flight of 02/06/09. The most consistently great flight among a night of wonderful wines. The wine was still fairly reduced which I found to improve with air. The nose is tough to evaluate initially but the layered darker fruit and herbs emerge. The plate is so broad and deep. Delicious.

  • 2006 Lucien Le Moine Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

In a flight of 02/06/09. Another impressive 06 from Lucien Le Moine. A gorgeous nose that kept getting better and better with time -- big, lively, bright red fruits with so much spice and meatiness. Crazy good. The palate is so, so intense. Rich red fruit for days with terrific depth. Balanced and long. Wow.

  • 2009 Lucien Le Moine Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 99 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

In a flight of 02/06/09. My WOTN in a dinner filled with stunner after stunner. The nose is simply perfect -- everything I could ask for. Full and unending with a mix of red and black cherry and huge amounts of spice. Rich yet bright. Wow, wow, wow. The palate isn't perfect, but close. One of the riper wines of the evening, but it all holds together amazingly well. Despite the ripeness this is intense, bright and lively as it dances across the palate. Ridiculous amounts of spice accenting the fruit. A memorable wine.
