Flight 1 (43 Notes)

  • 1988 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Tasting, brief note. From magnum. Apple and pear aromas and flavors with background toasted rye bread hints. Slightly fresher than another magnum from a month ago. Just wonderful.

  • 1971 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. Very old flavors and aromas with more earth than anything else. Still manages to show its concentration and eminent class.

  • 1955 Domaine Grivelet Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Certainly tasty, even if somewhat unclear the varietal(s) in the wine.

  • 1964 Maison Leroy Beaune 1er Cru 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. Actually tasted twice, once shortly after opened, then again 90 minutes later. At first this was moderately mature with wonderful red cherry aromas and flavors with savory spice, leather and roasted meat. Long finish. 93 points at first. Much more advanced when tasted at the end of the tasting. Also much less interesting, much shorter.

  • 1985 Maison Leroy Ruchottes-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Actually tasted twice, once shortly after opened, then again 90 minutes later. All black fruit, maturing nicely. Meaty with Engaging spice and Grand Cru concentration. Good balance, moderate length. Consistent both times tasted, 90 minutes apart.

  • 1978 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. Actually tasted twice, once shortly after opened, then again 90 minutes later. Red fruit with good spice aromas, subdued flavors to start. Second tasting was still just as fresh, but showing more fruit concentration, more spice and greater concentration. 91 points at that latter point.

  • 1978 Charles Vienot Richebourg 84 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Not much going on aromatically. God density on palate, but somewhat bland. Nothing here to make me think Vosne.

  • 2007 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Forward and charming red fruit with classically Vosne spice. Very fun and blalnced, just slightly simple for DRC Echezeaux. Certainly seems in its optimal drinking window.

  • 1988 Gros Frère et Sœur Richebourg 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Vosne spice with powerful red fruit, maturing slowly and nicely. Big finish. Exceeded expectations.

  • 1985 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Actually tasted twice, once shortly after opened, then again 90 minutes later, seemingly from a second bottle. Both displayed ripe and mature red fruit with background spice. Very good balance and concentration. Second taste seemed slightly richer, fresher and longer, so also more cellarworthy.

  • 2001 Domaine Denis Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Good combination of elegant black and red cherry with meaty character. Some faint new oak still protrudes detracting from the overall charm, but this is slowly evolving in a god direction, so I think there is upside, but I'd be patient.

  • 2001 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Actually tasted twice, once shortly after opened, then again 90 minutes later. Really charming black berries, espresso, licorice and assorted spices. Very long and unfolding. Still showing a bit more new oak than I'd prefer, but that is nit-picking here. I haven't had this wine in 5 years and like this more now than ever since its glorious youthful exuberance right after release. Very similar both times tasted, 2nd just ever-so-slightly longer and more harmonious. Upside from here.

  • 2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Dominated by whole cluster character, much like a bottle from a few months ago, but more of everything else great comes through today. Powerful and extremely enticing, with serious structure always in the background.

  • 1966 Château Margaux 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Tasting, brief note. Magnum. Great aromas of mature black cherry, licorice, spices ,tobacco. Similar flavors, albeit slightly less complex or fun.

  • 1928 Château Brane-Cantenac 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Tasting, brief note. Cigar box aromas with fully mature black cherry and spice notes. Surprisingly bright flavors as well, even if slightly lean at the very end. Good length. What a treat.

  • 1982 Château Certan de May 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Tasting, brief note. Ripe black fruit, nicely mature with slightly sweet spice. In its drinking window, but that window will stay open a long time going forward, even if probably little upside.

  • 1982 Château Beychevelle 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Tasting, brief note. Lots of black fruit, still rather fresh for a 1982, but also somewhat firmand even backward. A rare 1982 that I find still needs cellar time.

  • 1961 Château Rausan-Ségla

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Tasting, brief note. Slightly tired. Good length, but not enough pleasure to appreciate.

  • 1926 Château Calon-Ségur 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Tasting, brief note. Earth, meats and plenty of remnants of lingering black fruit making this fresher than there was any reason to expect, very long and enjoyable. I preferred this over the Brane Cantenac 1928, but most others disagreed.

  • 1961 Château Boyd-Cantenac

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Tasting, brief note. Not much fruit, but plenty of earth, mushroom and barnyard. Some truffle, some dirt. Enjoyable.

  • 1976 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast

    USA, California, North Coast

Tasting, brief note. A wine I wanted to enjoy, and apparently others enjoyed it quite a bit more. However, I found the fruit to be tired and ripe, plus a touch too much Brett.

  • 1974 Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Mountain 94 Points

    USA, California

Tasting, brief note. Magnum. Rich black fruit, vibrant and powerful for its age. Very good+ concentration. Still firm and still unfolding. I seemed to enjoy this wine more than other tasters today.

  • 1978 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde 92 Points

  • 1990 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Spéciale 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasting, brief note. I have probably not had this wine in 10 years and it is even better now than I remember from the past. Black fruit, roasted game, leather and plenty of spice. Very rich but the sweetness of its youth has become less prominent and now fits neatly into the rich and complex assembly of flavors and aromas. Powerful and long finish.

  • 2001 Domaine Michel Niellon Chevalier-Montrachet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Good fruit, slightly more advanced than I would hope, but 2001 isn't a vintage to age. Moderate concentration, nice balance. Certainly good, but not what I hope for Chevalier-Montrachet.

  • 2001 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Le Montrachet 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Ripe apple and some tropical hints. Very good concentration and depth, but I'd just want a little more freshness and energy. Age appropriate for the vintage, so it's time to drink up.

  • 1982 Joseph Drouhin Chevalier-Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Earth and spice with almost enough hints of matured fruit. Good+ depth and length, this certainly exceeded my expectations.

  • 1982 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Rockstar great. Ripe fruit is shockingly fresh, very powerful and nicely nuanced with mint, spice and textural beauty. Very long. My favorite white of the tasting, and almost everybody else seemed to agree.

  • 1990 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. Starts off ripe and almost tropical, very "1990" but not particularly "Chablis," but the power and richness beginning transforms into a minerally finish that is more elegant and classic. Well stored bottles, such as this one, should easily drink well for another decade.

  • 1993 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Chevalières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Tasting, brief note. Rich aromatic start with apple, almond butter and sweet spice. Similar flavors with very good weight and power for its level and for the vintage. Very balanced. Impressive Villages.

  • 1999 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. Very ripe aromas and flavors with mostly stone fruit plus some tropical hints, well complemented by floral and spice support. At first I thought this seemed flabby, but midddle forward there was a good burst of freshness, minerality and acidity towards long finish.

  • 1992 Bouchard Père et Fils Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Nose is slightly musty, flavors are very enjoyable and balanced. A nice wine, but I would never have thought this was Montrachet.

  • 1959 Joseph Drouhin Meursault

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Tasting, brief note. An unexpected and pleasant surprise. Big and ripe, shockingly fun and fresh. If blind, I'd have thought from 1990!

  • 1985 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Tasting, brief note. Riper vs 1983 but also less energetic, so slighter shorter and less interesting. Still nicely fresh.

  • 1983 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Tasting, brief note. Ripe with good concentration and good acidity. Baked apple and candied lemon coming through from the matured fruit that is still also simultaneously fresh. I preferred this vs 1985.

  • 1978 Conn Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 2 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Tasting, brief note. Big and powerful black fruit with some cigar box and licorice notes. Meaty and powerful with lots of nuance from its slow evolution. Very good.

  • 1978 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Tasting, brief note. Good richness and concentration, but less nuance or charm vs some others at this age. Still, very enjoyable.

  • 1985 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Tasting, brief note. There was an aromatic funk I couldn't get past here. At least several others agreed.

  • 1990 Ridge Geyserville 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Tasting, brief note. 64% Zinfandel. Lots of powerful black fruit with good freshness, good concentration and spice hints. Very tasty, even if slightly non-descript, other than "tasty, maturing red wine."

  • 2005 Château Bahans Haut-Brion 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Tasting, brief note. From the domaine. Inky black fruit with dark chocolate and cooked portobello mushrooms. Fruit is still dry dense, tannins still firm, but everything is very good. Needs more time, but clearly very good potential.

  • 2012 Château Haut-Brion

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Tasting, brief note. From the domaine. Black plum and berries with dark chocolate, licorice and freshly cracked black pepper. Charming already now, but lots of muscular power on long finish. Very, very cellarworthy, 93-96 point potential.

  • 2012 Château La Mission Haut-Brion

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
