30x 1955 & 1961 (mostly Bdx): Tasted single blind. Taste-off between the 1955 and 1961 vintages. Another win for the 1955 vintage here. The 1955 (rated 93 pts) had a singular, enchanting nose full of freshly braked bread and meaty notes. Same as the 1961 (rated 90 pts), there is not enough depth on the palate to play in the same category as the big names but still quit enjoyable and complete. The 1961 was a bit less giving and showed a bit astringent towards the finish. I‘m a fan of this winery after recent improvements in quality, especially of the fantastic 2018.
TN: A bit more restrained on the nose, dark brooding, luxurious, dark fruits and coffee. Same on the palate with coffee, dark fruit and lots of minerality and freshness with a finely melted tannin structure but so much life left in the tank. Towards the finish the acidity was a bit too pronounced tempering the overall experience. But all in all quite pleasant.
Decanting: Not decanted. I guess this would have opened up and improved with more air. Like many 1961s, these can be a bit muscular and need a bit of air.

Grand 1961 vs 1955 vintage tasting (Fribourg): Big 1961 vs 1955 tastings including 10 direct match-ups and 11 individual wines from 1961. The tasting was conducted in flights of 4, single-blind and with no previous decant with all bottles opened 1h prior to start. The line-up was dominated by Bordeaux reds, but also included 5 Sauternes, 1 Champagne, 3 Burgundy reds and 1 Ribera del Duero. The following observations are worth mentioning: i) 1961 generally came across as a better vintage today than 1955, ii) the performance correlated with the 1855 classification, iii) The most outstanding wines were outside of the Bordeaux reds with Veuve Clicquot Rosé '61, Vega Sicilia Unico '61 (both 97) and La Tour Blanche '61 (96) worth mentioning, iv) Top-performing Bordeaux was Margaux (95) in 1961 and Mouton in 1955. List of wines included in the tasting story.
Tasting note: A bit of espresso, fresh garrigue, a bit of earth, red cherry and blue berry fruit, a fine layer of sweet spices. Fresh palate, cool red berry fruit, but a rather thin texture with some green tannin lingering on into the finish.

Epic Bordeaux for an Epic Birthday!; 9/1/2021-9/12/2021 (Paris & Bordeaux): Drank side by side with the 1961 Canon as a comparison across the Chanel Bordeaux brands and perhaps as a birthday tribute to a good friend with a bit of leeway taken for the year. This bottle did not seem to be straight ex-Chateau (label more torn and faded) and it was very good, but the age was also more apparent here.

Tuesday Night Double Blind $60+ (Roswell, GA): A very small pour, got to the tasting late; dark dull maroon, lots of sediment; nose is blowing, plenty of age, mushroom, decaying fruit, wet earth, truffles galore, red fruit, spice, close, sexy, nose explodes from glass, plum, wild berry; good freshness on the palate, again strong mushroom with softer aged fruit; very interesting and well stored bottle; elixir, I could have smelled this all day; I was apparently closer than many with the '75 Pichon Lalande call.
