Introduction

Nine of us gathered for a semi-regular pizza night. No specific theme, but things trended toward Italian with some Rhone wines as well. Some very nice pizzas along with a few other tasty treats. Thanks to Brad and Marcia for hosting this motley crew.

Flight 1 (15 Notes)

  • NV Philippe Prié Champagne Tradition Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Consistent with note from 4/16/17. Happy to see this show up tonight. I can't really have it too much. This blends fruit and freshness in a crisp clean package very well. 91+pts.

  • NV Bertrand-Delespierre Champagne Premier Cru Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. Never had this producer before, good, more yeast here vs the Prie, brioche, white fruits, lightly chalk minerality.

  • 2014 Arianna Occhipinti Il Frappato 92 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane

Medium ruby red color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was delicious and worked so well with a number of coal and wood fired pizzas. There is a transparency here that makes the wine shine. Old world all the way with plenty of damp earth and soil, but a purity to the red cherry fruit with hints of darker fruits mixed with great aromatics and buoyancy. Definitely a wine seek out. 91+ to 92pts.

  • 2003 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Very dark red color. Splash double decanted and was open for 2 hours before drinking. Followed one glass for an hour and followed up the next day. This was not the same bottle that I've experienced in the past. The nose still offers some nice aromatics with dried cherry and dried berry, oak, licorice. But the palate has a more baked cherry flavor, not really in a good way, a blast of heat, oak, and aggressive tannins and simply no curb appeal. It wasn't any better the next day either. Interestingly I found I had made two purchases of this wine, 2 bottles from one source and 1 bottle from another. The first two bottles were just fine and what you'd expect. I have to believe that there was a prior storage/transportation issue with this bottle. Therefore, no score.

  • 2007 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Tradition

Tasted. Had been open for a couple days. Can't gage anything as it was just gone at this point.

  • 2006 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The nose was much better than the palate here. Nose offers a fairly typical mix of Provencal herbs, red and black fruits, anise, pepper and spice. The palate though was rather harsh and shows a sharpness that doesn't really appeal to me. Strong pepper and a sense of alcohol if not exactly overt. Don;t think this was decanted, maybe that would help, but I wasn't loving this tonight.

  • 2005 Didier Dagueneau Les Jardins de Babylone Moelleux 93 Points

    France, Southwest France, Jurançon

Medium dark orange-gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. What a poised and delicious elixir of textural delights; orange, mango, apricot, very long and sporting great balance. This brings intensity and ripe fruits but doesn't feel the least bit cloying. Loved it with Brad's lemon tart. Thanks to Brad for both! 93+?pts.
