Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2011 Donnafugata Mille e una notte

    Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane

Opaque core with maroon rim; cedar, dark cherry, new oak, dusty, juicy dark fruit, herbs, dark berry; juicy and tart, bigger, structured but lithe and high acid, cedar, fine grain tannin, slight roasted fruit; called '11 Chianti IGT but the Barbera call made sense; one of the freshest bottles of this to date.

  • 2009 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Mine, accidentally left in car for 2 hours in Atlanta heat, cork protruding and some seepage- damn, after a couple hours in blast chiller I felt this was not showing heat damage (same can't be said if I decided to open this months/years later); pale yellow color; leesy nose, rich, almost biscuity, apple custard, mineral in background, white flower, marzipan; fierce acid on palate, very good for vintage, good fat and mineral, green and golden apple along with some lemon zest, long finish, nice mid-palate, lazer like acid cuts right down mainstreet; very solid; didn't pick up the chalkiness or tidal pool but rarely do for Chablis of this level at such a young age.

  • 2015 Hamilton Russell Vineyards Pinot Noir

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

Pale crimson rose, see through; reduced a bit, smoky, strawberry, sexy nose, high acid, mineral, high acid, some sweetness and slight candy leads me out of Burgundy though this is well done; honestly thought this was '14 Oregon.

  • 2009 Domaine Castagnier Charmes-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

See through dull crimson, paler rim; cherry pit, roses, sweet fruit but Burgundy, fresh and pretty nose; high acid, fresh and sweet sour cherry, red, strawberry, good balance, easy tannin, 1er Cru quality at best, great drinkability; called '09 Pousse d'Or Pommard Jarolieres, not getting CdN.

  • 2006 Brancaia Il Blu Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Deep core with maroon rim; oak balm, dark red fruit, mushroom, cedar, red cherry, roses, slight medicinal, very viscous, dried roses, high toned, ripe, tobacco; delicious, wanted to go Brunello but talked onto a more modern Barolo.

  • 2006 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Black core with brown rim; softer silkier, Italian, fennel, brown sugar, aged, past peak but still drinkable; past.

  • 2007 Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo Terlo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Pretty dark crimson core with orange rim; beautiful nose, mint, cedar, roses, cherry, very slight cinnamon; savory, classic Barolo, sappy mid, pleasant grip; delicious, should have called this, really improved since last tasting note.

  • 2007 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dark dull crimson core with orange rim; mushroom, seems more aged than Einaudi, very perfumed nose, fennel, roses, aged, dried fruit, touch of brown sugar, celery seed, mahogany, noble; dry, savory, sappy mid-palate, herbs, drinking great now; called '04 Sandrone Le Vigne, drinks well above its price; feels like an earlier drinker-enjoy these sooner than later.

  • 2004 Clos Mogador Priorat

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Dark ruby core with maroon rim; roses, sweet raspberry, cedar, dusty, balm, almost seashell; sweet and juicy fruit, higher acid, some floral, good wrap of tannin, roses, long floral finish, slight bitter mineral; was thinking Priorat but the multitude of Italians led me there like everyone else, trust your gut.

  • 2012 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

See through dull red, lighter rim; vanilla, smoky, vanilla and strawberry, light cherry, fesh and bright, good mid-palate density, very young and sappy almost to a fault as it hurts drinkability, time should help this; called '11 Clos des Mouches.

  • 2011 Bodega Catena Zapata Chardonnay White Stones Adrianna Vineyard

Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, Gualtallary

Dull amber yellow color; beeswax, white flowers, asian pear, lemondrop, kumquat; tart fruit on palate, lemon, apple, good flavors and noble texture; I like many were on Marsanne, called Chante Alouete; well done.

Closing

Some really nice wines this evening. Wish tasting order could have been adjusted a bit as some wines seemed heavier than they were and others were skewed flavor wise. A nice mix.
1-Ratti Marcenasco
2-Einaudi Terlo
3-Castagnier Charmes
