Introduction

Wow, what an evening! 23 wines from the 1967 vintage. All purchased upon release (I believe) and cellared impeccably since then. Thank you for your warmth, hospitality and amazing generosity, Sally and Don!

Flight 1 - Warm Up (6 Notes)

Flight 2 - Red Bordeaux (10 Notes)

  • 1967 Château Cheval Blanc 89 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Pale salmon color. Soft, round, deeply flavored. Wafting nose of subdued red and orange fruits.

  • 1967 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Spectacular. More deeply colored, still salmon to the rim, a core meniscus of vibrant red orange. Lead pencil, cedar, soft ripe warm red fruit, plums, earth, long finish, still some structure remaining. Brilliant. My third favorite of Flight #2.

  • 1967 Les Forts de Latour 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Spectacular. Deeply hued purple red color with vibrant orange rim. Classic deep structure and liveliness. Earth, cassis, plum, mulberry, glycerin, very deeply flavored. Incredibly long finish. Still retaining quite a bit of structure. My second favorite of Flight #2. Amazing wine.

  • 1967 Château Gloria 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

From magnum. Soft round nose and flavors. Classic St Julien, but maybe on its last legs. Red fruits, pale color. Fading in glass.

  • 1967 Château Latour Grand Vin 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Stupendous. Deeply purple and mahogany hued still, bricking, orange to rim. Incredibly vibrant coloration - shining actually. Huge primary fruit still, combined with secondaries and tertiaries. Grape must, pure Cabernet cassis fruit, plum, mulberry, lead pencil, vibrant attack and finish. Superbly long, and fully of complexity. I could taste hints of this the next morning. My favorite of Flight #2.

  • 1967 Château Lafite Rothschild 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Incredibly pale color, almost see through pale pink/red. Slightly oxidized nose, which completely disappeared on the palate. All things feminine and graceful - lead pencil, graphite, cassis, warm hints of remaining red fruit, but mostly awash in tertiaries. Supremely elegant, but this paled in its soft femininity next to the Latour. Remarkable, but on the downhill slide.

  • 1967 Château Margaux 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

As Don said, "cuddly." Pale hued, almost transparent at rim, but with a deeply hued red meniscus. Very soft and round on nose and palate. Very feminine and graceful in its red fruits. Warm round finish that goes on and on.

  • 1967 Château La Mission Haut-Brion 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From magnum. Pink/red/pale purple hued, a bit murky in color. Ripe, sweet, round attack, very rich sweetish finish, especially as it sat in glass. I kept going back to this, enjoying its flavor profile immensely - plums, gravel, warm earth. A winner. My 5th favorite of Flight #2. Still going strong at the end of the evening.

  • 1967 Château Mouton Rothschild 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This had a strange herbal quality to me that was slightly off-putting. Thin, bright pale fruits, a shell of its former self, maybe not the best vintage for this wine, but amazing nonetheless. A bit four square for me, but maybe palate fatigue was starting to set in. :)

  • 1967 Pétrus 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Deeply hued garnet/purple/red, murky, fully bricked. Amazing nose of mulberries, plums, tobacco, earth - full of tertiaries. All things ripe, beautiful, elegant and purple. These shown through on the palate as well, though the attack was soft and round. Not much structure remaining. Super long finish. Again, I tasted hints of this the next morning.

Flight 3 - Germany (2 Notes)

Flight 4 - Sauternes (3 Notes)

  • 1967 Château de Rayne-Vigneau 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Youthful appearance - light bright yellow gold. Creme brulee, toffee, sugar on the finish, beautiful acidity. Bright, medium long.

  • 1967 Château Gilette Crème de Tête 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Bright deep orange gold. Much more deeply colored, longer, richer, hints of coconut, classic Sauternes creme brulee, maple syrup, toffee, hard rock candy, seriously long finish.

  • 1967 Château d'Yquem 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

How did I end up ever tasting this wine? Lucky me. Thank you Sally and Don! Deep burnished orange/gold. Still youthful nose - a smorgasbord of everything delicious - deep burnt, ripe creme brulee, toffee, caramel, liquid amber resin, butterscotch. I tasted this for three hours on waking the next morning. It was seeping from my pores. Heaven in a glass. 98+pts, this will go for another 50 years, at least. My obvious favorite of Flight #4.

Flight 5 - Porto (2 Notes)

  • 1967 Cockburn Porto Vintage 93 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Pale strawberry red. Sweetish, wafting nose of ripe sweet plums, glycerin, cherries, all things red and etheric. Superb. Wonderfully long finish, but my palate was starting to cave in.

  • 1967 Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage 97 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Wow! My palate perked up with this! Deeply hued purple/red. Bright vibrant color all the way to the rim. Strawberry, raspberry, glycerin, cherry cough syrup, huge finish. Supremely smooth and elegant with a blasting structure all rolled into one. Another 30 years to this bottle. My favorite of Flight #5, and maybe even more to come from this wine.

Closing

Thanks again to all who attended and honored Sally and Don's wedding anniversary.
Leslie and I talked towards the end of the event, and he asked me "What do we do after this?" To which I responded "Pay it forward. This is an inspiration to us, the younger generation. Next it is our turn."
May we be worthy!
Thanks again Don and Sally for a tasting of a lifetime. Have a blast on your celebratory travels.
Much love from all of us to both of you!
