  • A Night to Remember - Don and Sally's 50th Wedding Anniversary (Don and Sally's Home): From magnum. Soft round nose and flavors. Classic St Julien, but maybe on its last legs. Red fruits, pale color. Fading in glass.

  • this note is primarily for intellectual purposes since the wine is no longer available in the u.s. market.
this wine was a gift from uncle marty and aunt betty. it survived moves from scarsdale to brooklyn to mountain lakes to kinderhook, finally to rest in the richmond county cellar for 3 years. even though i was aware that this wine was past its prime, i held on to it for sentimental reasons, remembering that 1967 was the second commercial vintage of my tasting career as well as the fact that gloria was heralded as a star of the vintage, especially at its price point. the wine was also ascribed to be of "investment quality" having been recommended by the stockbroker (george barone) who had done so much for the family.
abiding by the new year's resolution to drink up the relics in the cellar, the turn for this wine arrived. had the wine for new year's day dinner with pat. accompanied by prosciutto and mellon appetizer followed by homemade pea soup and a final course of french sheep cheese.
bottle fill was high shoulder/low neck. the cork was firm but offered minimal resistance upon extraction. cork was saturated with liquid but no ullage through the top.
this wine has to be counted as one of god's miracles. there was some initial acetic funkiness on the cork and in the glass, raising the worst of fears. this cleared within 5 minutes and it was evident that the wine was still alive.
i recall drinking this wine in its youth when it was fruity and vibrant.
presently, the color, although somewhat translucent was still cherry red with no signs of browning. the edge was clear. there remain noticeable hints of cherry, raspberry and cedar on the nose. mouth feel is firm but with short finish and minimal aftertaste.
the wine maintained a steady state for 30 minutes, following which it bloomed with enhancement of all the qualities described above. it remained pleasant for another 15 minutes.
it would have been interesting to see how long the wine would last before fading, but i could not bring myself to do this.
the last sip was tainted by the tannins left in the fine sediment.
i suspect that the professional reviewers were somewhat biased by the wine's provenance, and could not bring themselves to acknowledge its full potential.
owners of more recent vintages might want to reassess their projected longevities after reading this.
