Sometimes You Can Go Back: The Shrimp Heads Ride Again

510 Lounge, Mpls

Introduction

This was the first foray back to the former La Belle Vie, now reincarnated as Don Saunder's latest project, The 510 Lounge. This used to be a favorite of the group and a great venue on all levels. As one would expect, the dishes were well executed - with several being very noteworthy - and service was outstanding. But those pesky giant prawns weren't on the menu. Craig will have to request those for next time...

  • NV R. & L. Legras Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Always a solid and a top QPR value. The bottle had a powerful, driving stream of fine bubbles. Seemed like the bottle had been agitated though - had to hold the cork in for almost a full minute to avoid foaming over big time.

  • 2006 Domaine Dublère Corton-Charlemagne 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Medium plus golden hue. Drank 1 glass over an hour. This was an interesting wine. The nose is better here and shows lemon, lemon confit, lacquer, hazelnut, and matchstick. The palate is full bodied, lemon, more angular, honey, hazelnut, reduction, moderate oak tones still present. Reminded me of an aged Lopez blanco where you get those oxidative qualities too. Certainly shows its maturity and probably too much for my taste, though I suspect others may find this more compelling.

  • 2010 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Light green gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus. Simply stated, a rock star wine. This was a follow up bottle to a splendid recent tasting a month ago. Rest assured, this was just as good and wildly impressive as that bottle was. This is a pretty special wine that is in its full glory now - it is hard to imagine that this can get any better over time. The words that come to mind for this wine are elegant, classic, ethereal, precise, and pristine among many others. Earthy, saline, complex green and yellow fruit, oyster shell, very long, very impressive. 96+pts.

  • 2013 Domaine Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Medium gold color - a bit darker than I'd expect. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Reductive nose that burns off over 20 minutes. Lemon, oak, flint, matchstick - that blows off, wood spice. The palate is medium full bodied, refined and expressive, tart fruits, a complex mix of citrus flavors, orange peel, powdery sweet tart extract, long with moderate complimentary oak. This worried me on pouring, but that was completely unfounded. Hitting a good spot.

  • 2008 Domaine Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Lighter medium red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 9o minutes. This was a beautiful wine, grand cru quality, elegant and light but with impressive depth and definition. The nose is splendid with leather, red fruits, cheesecloth, forest floor, rose hips, complex high toned spices, funk, and later hints of mint. The palate is medium bodied, consistent with the nose, very pretty, long and expressive with the rose petal and spice box top notes shining through on the finish.

  • 1993 Louis Jadot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Medium dark maroon hued red color. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus. Another delightful bottle showing blissful maturity. This was defined by the distinctive soil signature along with the earthy and deep forest floor aromas; dried cherries, funky, French onion soup, spiced, mushroom, medium body.

  • 1998 Château Le Bon Pasteur 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 75 minutes. Dark brooding fruits, leather, earth, oak, rustic, gritty tannins. To Chablis28's comments, I think this may improve modestly, but I think this will always be a more rustic wine. 90+ to 91pts.

  • 2004 Marcarini Barolo Brunate 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dark red color. This got around 2.5hrs of slow ox; followed one glass over an hour. This was still painfully tannic and very youthful, licorice, red fruits, crushed rock minerality. This needs considerable time. 90(+)pts.

  • 2006 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dark red color. Slow-O for 5 hours. Followed one glass over an hour. This was pretty disjointed tonight, showing some heat and powerful tannins. Savory notes to the darker berry fruits and balsamic. Needs significant time. Score withheld.
