2008 Champagne - 25 top names tasted blind: This was served non blind as the aperitiv. I really liked it. Expressive nose with brioche, precise palate, enough stuffing, long finish.

Champagne and Pinot Noir WIMPS #168 31st August 2023 (La Trompette, Chiswick): This is an interesting wine with an apple paté de fruits character to the nose, a couple of ppm of blueberry. A certain appliness to the palate as well. The bubbles vanish fairly quickly. Although no suggestion of oxidation it feels older than the 2002 Vieilles Vignes de Chardonnay from the same house it is served with. Pleasant enough but not at quite that level for me.

Candied orange zest, lemon, citrus flower, Danish, honey. Extraordinary complexity - the nose deserves a perfect score on its own. Bone dry, chalky texture. Still very tight, but it opens up after a couple of hours. Long finish. To drink through an entire meal. Competes with Comtes, Belle Epoque and the likes. Drink now - 2038.

Planning Session (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Light gold color. Drank a couple glasses over 90 minutes plus. It's been 14 months since the last bottle. There'd been a run a few years back. Every bit as good as it has been now. This still is quite consistent with my previous notes. Green apple, apple peel, ginger, panna cotta texture, lemon peel, lots of chalk driven minerality which gives this more weight and demands food. 92+ to 93pts.

Add this to my "Should have bought more" list. Both graceful and elegant, this could not be mistaken for anything but a premium BdB. Old vine complexity. Pear, apple, almond cream, brioche with bright chalky minerality. Animated! I wish I had several more in the cellar

Burgundy WIMPS 2022 - Corrèges table (La Trompette): Super clean in style, with a delicate, airy, creamy nose - very BdB in style. Fresh and lithe on the palate, enlivened with lime zest, creamy and long rather than at all lean or thin. Tempting from the first sniff, but seemed to improve with air, so it seems likely there's more to come.

Intense, complex aromas of lemon, lime, orange, yeast, vanilla and a hint of nutmeg. Creamy lemon sorbet and ripe apple flavors with a chalky / salty finish. Crispy and fresh with perfectly balanced acidity and tons of minerality. Perplexingly rich and fresh at the same time. Delicious!
Plenty of runway for further development, but drinking extremely well right now. Don’t be afraid to open this. I’m surprised this isn’t scoring higher.

Good bottle. Maybe a + Has some breadth and depth with a touch of richness yet it’s light and lean. Subtle enough nose but there is a electric backend and almost spice like finish from the acidity. I imagine this was a bit more austere a few years back but seems in a great place now and over the next few years.

With an hour open, this started to show some of the white fruit and cereal aromatics of early maturity. But it's largely still pretty tightly coiled and in need of additional age to relax. Still, it's very appealing at this stage.

Quite nice though this bottle showed the early stages of earth / soil notes overtaking the rich orchard fruit notes. That's a turn that doesn't excite me as the boisterous rich fruit has been what I've loved about this wine.

This delivered a lovely mouthful of fresh golden delicious apple dipped in honey. It was surprisingly relaxed, with relatively gentle acids. I found it very attractive even if I'd hoped for a bit more focus for this 2008. But overall I'm happy with the direction this is going, and based on this bottle it may mature ahead of some other 2008s - at least in 750ml format. I tend to prefer mature Cote des Blancs, but may accelerate my pace with these a bit. Had a glass left for day 2 and found the sweetness sticking out.

Killer bottle. So rich and biscuity, with pears, apples, honeycomb, candle wax, ginger snaps, buttered toast and almond cake. Yet that nervy acidity and focused mineral component gives this wine so much verve. Loving this, long life ahead.

Nose: The nose is highly aromatic and expressive, filled with limes, pears, apples, crushed rocks, floral tones, almonds, saline, white fruits, peaches, and toast. There is excellent depth and balance here with a style that draws you in repeatedly.
Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity. The acidity is refreshing and well integrated. The feel is polished and lithe with pears, limes, apples, crushed rocks, saline, almonds, and floral notes on the back.
Overall: This is drinking beautifully right now. It is filled with freshness, balance, depth, and class that really take it to another level. This feels like it will easily hold up for another 5-8 years and could well go even longer in a good cellar.

Weeknight Wines Blind: Served blind next to 4 other champagnes (also blind). Have drank a bunch of these the past several years and finished my final bottle a few months ago. Disgorged March 2015. I just can't store these things in my cellar, as the bottle shape is a PITA. Clean, green apple, lower dosage, pure flavored. Bright acids with a leaner edged palate. The fruit and weight is a nice counter to the acidity. This oughta age well as the guts and material is here already for a great wine.

Super yums. Previous bottles have been more about potential, so I hid these for a year or two. Now, this is starting to pick up the compulsive drinkability and crack-like deliciousness of the 2006. I think two more years and this will be in the pocket.

Heidi's Gang of Six Redux: Some Burg Heavy Hitters (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Boy, the last few bottles of this have just been killer. This has a lot of energy and lift, jumps across the palate, brilliant minerality, biscuit, white and green fruits, excellent breadth from start to finish. Love it. 93+pts.

It is 100% from Chouilly grand cru plots. Pierre Gimonnet is one of the biggest grower champagne producers in terms of size of vineyards. This bottle is slightly more advanced, lost a bit of its charm, partly due to the storage condition in my view. The wine still offered lemon zest, citrus peel, some dried apricot on both nose and palate, but was a bit flat in the finish.

Damn, opened this for our annual high school friends get together. This really turned heads tonight. Just a great mix of fruit and minerality, yeasty, crisp pear, tart green apple, lemon chiffon, lively and with nice dimensions, this really popped.

Other recent notes do a good job of describing the aromatic profile on this. I'll add that to me it seems quite young on the palate still. The fruit is tight and focused on the mid-palate, with brisk acidity at the core. I feel this will show even better with some time in the cellar to integrate and unfold.

French and Italians at Bardo (Bardo, Mpls, MN): Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was really firing tonight. Back to ehere it had been at peak. Maybe just bottle variation, maybe just me - but I loved it. This felt really pure and and focused tonight, a stream of fresh cut pear mixed with an almond creme brulee texture and great energy. I agree with Chablis28 that this really showed a nice mix of fruit and minerality that was just engaging.

I liked this bottle a little better than previous ones, but I still didn't like it as much as other people at the table. Again, quite light. It did seem to have a little more toast, which is probably why I thought it was better.

Stellar. Wonderful complexity on the nose with fresh baked bread, lemon curd, and tertiary undertones entering the picture. Fine mousse and well textured on the palate with layers unfolding from mid to finish. Certainly a wine and producer to note.

A Mixed Bag at Young Joni (Young Joni, NE Mpls): Light golden color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. The nose has nice green melon, lime, citrus, quite bright on the nose, almond, mineral notes. The palate is also quite bright with melon, citrus, trending more to grapefruit tonight, chalk, and citrus pith, with a touch of almond. Very nice fruit that jumps out at you, and there's a fair bit of chalk here as well; but it did become a bit angular on the finish after 30 minutes. 91+ to 92pts.

god, I hate these Special Club bottles and I have enough cellar space to just make these silly shaped things work but the other Club Tresor members, I can't do it! As for this bottle of 2008, probably the best so far. I found the nice rocky note that is woven into the finish, joined by the apple note and what seemed like a cool dash of honey. In reality, if I had to pick on this wine, I would say the dosage is just a tick higher than I gravitate to now, but as an acid and energy freak, it's not a surprise. At this stage, this drinks great and with plenty of pleasure. I have two left, will let them rest another few years before I drink the next one.

I liked this OK, but I don't think that it was worth the $80 that I paid for it. I have had NV bottles from other producers at half the price that I liked better -- e.g., Roederer Premiere Cru.

Kind of our house champagne since we started with a case. It's a full figured girl from a sensational Chardonnay vintage. Not for the feint of heart, delicate, stylistic lover. We choose to drink with richly textured foods like this wine, not to sip on the veranda. I'm a fan.

First bottle of three to open. Really enjoyed this and we had it with an ideal serving temp, too. Light touch of bread dough but the real tasting players here are the apple and lemon peel. Both generous, and not sure of the dosage but it seemed well balanced in the total package. The green apple was vivid yet the lemon tones created a delicious frame around it.

Pale yellow-green color. Surprisingly restrained, lean and savory nose with somewhat reticent aromas of stone dust, some yeasty French bread and a hint of red apple. The wine is dry, mineral and quite full-bodied on the palate with fresh and rather concentrated flavors of stony minerality, apple peel bitterness, some leesy creaminess, a little bit of mealy green apple and a mineral hint of mouth-drying chalk dust. Overall the wine feels ripe without any sense of sweetness. The high acidity lends good sense of intensity, while the silky smooth mousse keeps the wine creamy and approachable. The finish is crisp, firm and dry with lengthy flavors of apple peel bitterness, stony minerality, some chalk dust tones and a hint of apple.
A ripe yet bone-dry Blanc de Blancs that feels very mineral and almost devoid of fruit, yet still surprisingly approachable due to its rather concentrated, almost mouth-filling character. Overall the wine feels still too young and most likely the wine is just so tightly-knit that the fruit remains hidden underneath a tough layer of minerality. I'd let the wine wait for another 4-6 years just to coax out some fruit and complexity. Maybe a bit too lean and understated BdB for my taste, but there's definitely some real charm to the minerality and elegance here. Promising.

I got on the grower champagne train quite late in my wine evolution. And then one of my tasting group members introduced me to the special club level via an 02 Gimonnet. Whoa. I fell head over heals in love. This vintage doesn't hit the heights of the 02 for me by memory, but is similar to the 06. It would be fun to try them all side by side. The 08 vintage is very strong for Chardonnay, and it is evident in this mix. Very fresh acid and noticeably young. I'm going to try and sit on my stash a little while.

HDH Burgundy Auction; 4/1/2016-4/2/2016 (Chicago, IL): Disgorged June 21, 2015. The nose features a really nice peach and apple quality. Bright nose with notes of lemon and grapefruit with some minerality. Palate shows very powerful acidity (indicative of the vintage), dominated by grapefruit flavors. Acidity is strong and tart, very unbalanced at this point. Medium+, tart finish. The wine appears to lack complexity in order to develop into something big. Should certainly improve, however - but I question the potential.

Madeira and Champagne (Chicago, IL): Disgorged July 21, 2015. Very intense white fruits on the nose, with a touch of marzipan. The acidity here is a big electric jolt, and there's a lovely almond note on the finish as well. The palate shows tart green apples, but there's a lot more concentration and stuffing on the palate today. I'm confident this will have great potential, but open a bottle today to experience the explosive power here.

This is a delicious Champagne from the great 2008 vintage.
Light yellow in color with a golden hue.
Medium plus in body with small bubbles and medium plus acidity.
Dry on the palate with a nice mouthfeel. Elegant and complex.
Showing bruised apples, yeast, citrus, brioche, spices, minerals, sea salt, light river rocks, earth and white pepper.
Long finish with limes and almonds.
This 15 year old Champagne is rich and very enjoyable by itself or with food.
Nicely balanced and concentrated, with nice complexity and mouthfeel.
I paired it with light appetizers.
12.5% alcohol by volume.

This has a lot of energy and lift, jumps across the palate, brilliant minerality, biscuit, white and green fruits, excellent breadth from start to finish. Love it. 93+pts.

This bottle is slightly more advanced, lost a bit of its charm, partly due to the storage condition in my view. The wine still offered lemon zest, citrus peel, some dried apricot on both nose and palate, but was a bit flat in the finish.

Stellar. Wonderful complexity on the nose with fresh baked bread, lemon curd, and tertiary undertones entering the picture. Fine mousse and well textured on the palate with layers unfolding from mid to finish. Certainly a wine and producer to note.

god, I hate these Special Club bottles and I have enough cellar space to just make these silly shaped things work but the other Club Tresor members, I can't do it!

The acidity here is a big electric jolt, and there's a lovely almond note on the finish as well. The palate shows tart green apples, but there's a lot more concentration and stuffing on the palate today. I'm confident this will have great potential, but open a bottle today to experience the explosive power here.
