Introduction

Some great BBQ and a mix of wines.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2004 Le Brun-Servenay Champagne Exhilarante Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank 1+ glass over 45 minutes. Head turning good tonight and garnering raves from everyone. Fine bead, creamy mousse, lovely toast, hazelnut, pear, caressing mousse, elegant yet intense on the palate and showing great balancing acidity. Looks to be in the groove. 94 to 94+pts.

  • 2004 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Bosconia

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Dark red color. PNP, followed one glass over 3 hours plus. Drank this side by side with an '04 Tondonia Reserva. Both had issues, but he Tondonia was in a bit better place. Tight, some high pitched graphite, subdued red and black fruits, and wood, lots of wood. This gets herbaceous after an hour and also takes on a buttersctch topnote. on the nose. The palate really is pretty wrapped up in wood at this point and 3 hours did nothing to change that. Behind the mask there is kirsch, black raspberry, and hints of alcohol at times. Appears nowhere near ready. Score reserved.

  • 2004 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Dark red color. PNP, followed one glass over 3 hours plus. Drank this side by side with an '04 Bosconia Reserva. Both had issues, but he Tondonia was in a bit better place. Tight, cedarbox, a bit of earthiness, cherry, cherry lacquer fruit. On the palate, cherry, cherry lacquer, wood, lots of wood, a sharp, nice dusty tannins though. Seems like the wood takes over with more glass time. Needs several years. Preferred tonight. Score reserved.

  • 2003 Wolf Blass Shiraz Platinum Label 93 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

Purple color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 3 hours. Funny, looks like no one has had this in years. Jan's bottle, and the last of a local store's closeout steal from years ago. These wines don't all hold up but this was still in a very good place. A lovely Aussie with an aromatic nose of blackberry, cassis, subtle earth, modest eucalyptus, pencil, and this gets wonderfully meaty after the first 30 minutes. The palate is full bodied and completely contains the alcohol, blackberry, blackberry, liqueur, glycerin, pepper, nice tannins, black and blue fruits, roasted game. A well made wine, breaking the mold of many Aussie shiraz. Perfect with our smoky pork ribs. 93+pts.

DOA, no fruit remaining, it has been consumed by the voracious 16.5% alcohol.

  • 2004 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley 94 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Purple color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 3 hours. This kept getting better through the evening. Very pretty fruit, big and lush, cassis juicy blackberry, bright blueberry, high toned spices, white pepper, and more roasted meat over time. The palate really offers a complex an layered mix of black and blue fruits from cassis and blackberries to boysenberry adn blueberry cobbler, pepper, charcoal, graphite, earth, and mint along with more subtle blood meal and dried herbs. A good way to drink this going out on a high note with great ribs. 93+ to 94pts.

  • 2005 Château de Rayne-Vigneau 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Medium dark gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 min from 375ml. This was showing nicely, a somewhat more restrained Sauternes, though there is plenty of depth to the honey, orange, orange peel, coconut, and subtle minty notes. The palate is still viscous enough with honey and spiced, dried apricot and orange cream on the palate. Just the right amount of sweetness to work with the acidity here. 92+pts.
