Second day of the VDP Tour at Hamburg.
This time the VDP is introducing the three zones Franken, Rheingau and Württemberg.
As the Rheingau is very well known for its great Rieslings and some fine Spätburgunder the two other zones do not have this high international reputation.
But times are changing!
There are some recommended wines from these zones too!
Well known in Europe for its specal fine grape the Silvaner a grape varietal originally from Austria.
But as well there are some fine Rieslings and high class Spätburgunders.
The Rheingau is like the Mosel one of the most clasic wine zones of Germany.
A high reputation for Riesling from famous vineyards since the middle ages!
This one is labelled as Hölle "Kantelborn", a part of the quiet big vineyard Hölle (about 36 hectares), very spicy, a real cool climate Riesling, on the midpalate great freshness , ending demanding saline long, **(*+ -?), 91+ potential

This one is more on the fruity side of Riesling, a basket full of rich balanced tropical fruit, ending tasty long, not really my style but a very good GG, **(*- ?), 89+ potential

Really young and subdued showing, chalky mineralic, light to midbodied, ending very saline and promising, *(***), 92+ potential

This Weingut is showing some classic style Rieslings as well, this Spätlese is more like a light Auslese, a very sumptuous bottle, rich in tropical fruit, the sweetness now still in the foreground, has to improve by cellaring, give this one a decade+, *(** -?), 88+ potential

A great potential dessert Riesling, all dominated by the rich concentrated sweetness of the fruit, but there are hints of mineralic salinity, superb density, ending very long and fresh, give this one up to two decades! *(*** -?), 93+ potential

This is all about Riesling tension, light to midbodied, fine elegance, long finish with an energetic acidity, way too young, *(**-****), 91+ potential
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Very fine and with a deep stonefruit, quiet fullbodied, ending vibrant long+ and with a long future ahead, *(**-****), 91+ potential

The owner of this famous Rheingau estate showed as well some mature samples of his Berg Rottland, he explained that this south slop vineyard has extreme differences in the ABV grading due to the specific year, this one is all about finesse, a 12% ABV elegant sample with enormous acidic tension, showing delicious ripe stonefruit, some tropical fruit hints, still with a lot of potential to mature well, **(**), 91- 92+ potential
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
And now this bottle from a very warm vintage, the first difference, 13,5% ABV, voluptuos tropical fruit, still tight, all components nearly balanced, harmonic with still some supporting acidity, a bottle to enjoy on its own, would prefer the leaner style to pair some food, ***(+), around 89- 90

Way too young, but indicating all you want from a great Riesling dry, full of energy, only light to midbodied, stonelicking rules, long+ aftertaste with long life ahead, *(***-?), 92- 93+ potential

Wild, wild, wild, making speechless, one of the best Riesling GG from the 2015 vintage, enormous lenght and still way too young, give this one up to a decade+, **(***), 93- 95+ potential
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
an open easy drinking GG, hmmm, not showing much of a great Riesling, a little indefinite, *(*-?), 85+?

The next not convincing sample, very young appearance, but where is the often shown generous fruit of this vineyard, o.K., this is not 2015 but this sample today nearly hides all, as I do always like the Hölle from Künstler I will not rate this one today........

More open and with a quiet rich fruit, but again for me today not convincing, maybe its my fault, I do not know, maybe this estates quality is getting worse?
We will see in the future!

This eatate is showing a 2015 sample as well, enormous density, deep, essence of rich yellow fruit, creamy silky limy on the midpalate, very long and still demanding, a knockout GG!, **(**-*****), 93+ potential

It is a shame: one of the big old Riesling players from Germany, but, only an o.k. appearance, far away from representing a GG! Fresh, some stonefruit, lacking tension, concentration and lenght, *(*-?), 83- 84+?
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
The next disappoitment! How is this possible, a GG from 2016, lightbodied, mild, a softy, lacking all of 2016, no tension, to big to fail?
This is only a misunderstanding, WORST sample of today!

A very interesting comparison with other vintages from Weil, this one is more on the lean side today, A lot of lemon juice, light to midbodied, elegant, ending vibrant mineralic saline, *(***-?), 92+ potential

Now this vineyard is showing its potential, the 2015 vintage, warm but fresh red cherry, bonedry on the midpalate, some funky mineralic hints like graphite, way too young but impressive tasty now, *(***-*****), 93- 94+ potential
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Next Spätburgunder GG from 2015, some slightly roasty hints, vanilla, really subdued today, only indicating what we will get in some years, fresh cherry tones, deep and very long+, demanding and promising! great! (****-*****), 94+ potential

Very creamy stonefruit showing, some peaches and tropical fruit, more harmonic than the Götzenberg now, somehow indicating the coming silkyness, very grapey, long+ aftertaste, *(***), 91- 92+ potential
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
this again is Württemberg, not the Nahe, same mineralic driven style like the best from there, chalky stone licking, midbodied, ending with crystalline precision, one for me!*(***-*****), 93+ potential

The VDP is showing some mature Lemberger (Blaufränkisch) as well, thi one is all about its basket full of herbs, mowed hay, lavender, a little meaty though, deep with a very long aftertaste, objectively very good, but not for me, ***(+ -*), around 90- 91
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Not as rich, tight and deep as the Lämmler, much more elegant, but lacking lenght also, **(*-?), around 87- 88
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Still very roasty, meaty though, drying tannin, puh...., again not for me, wondering if this one is getting harmonic in some time? *(*- ?), 86- ?
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
The oldest sample from the Lemberger varietal, puh....., exhausting again, somehow lifeless showing, this is overall not convincing, *-**, 85-?

2016 Rudolf Fürst Centgrafenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs
Germany, Franken
One of the most convincing Riesling from the Franken zone, showing all you want from a Riesling GG, Stony minerality, nearly flintstone hints, light to midbodied and really refreshing, recommended, just tasty now but will improve by further cellaring, **(*- +?), 90+ potential

2015 Rudolf Fürst Centgrafenberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs
Germany, Franken
Nearly half a year after my first try this bottle from the best known Fürst vinyard is putting a bench mark for the rest of the shown Spätburgunder, nowadays the "entry level" GG but really convincing, very tight still, deep, complex showing of chalky mineralic and delicious dark fruit, midbodied and even this young beginning to get balanced, long fresh aftertaste, **(**-?), 92+ potential

2015 Rudolf Fürst Schlossberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs
