Introduction

Pulled out all the Domaine de Chevalier wines for Sunday and thought I'd better Coravin the virgins to make sure that there were no surprises on the day - not that I mind the odd surprise. In fact having some dodgy wines isn't a bad thing as it makes the good ones look even better (yeah, well, I would say that). Additionally as it will be a sit down lunch I'm guessing I'm not going to get much time to examine these closely on the weekend...

Flight 1 - Bracket one - Red (5 Notes)

By a strange quirk of fate I decided to do the reds first. The 2010 was a definite outlier in terms of ripeness and structure. The 11 and 13 were very similar, though.

  • 1995 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From Coravin. Red currant, slight damp cellar, a bit dried out on the nose in fact. Touches of raisin and dusty oak backed by spice and meaty notes. Juicy, wet, fleshy but with quite muted flavours of fruit, leather, touches of spice and a little cigar box. Tannins are fine but present. Hmm.

  • 2010 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From Coravin. Rich. Cherry, blackcurrant and spice, slightly herbaceous plummy top notes. In the mouth it's fleshy and savoury with cherry, plums, plentiful drying talc textured tannins with oak spice joining on the long finish. Still very young. Pretty good but a puppy

  • 2011 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From Coravin. Jubey sour cherry fruit, herbaceous notes, cedar and a touch of meat and cream backed by almost spice bread as well as a touch of earthiness. Smells wet and all forest in the rain. Soft but savoury red berry and cherry, herbaceous notes, a lovely, juicy fleshiness with silky, grippy, persistent tannins. The whole is harmonious and travels long. Yum

  • 2012 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From Coravin. Plum, smells like the beginnings of cork taint initially with cedar and red cherry and a slightly dusty menthol quality on the nose. On the palate the fruit is a little muted and it finishes sour and spicy. Tannins are subdued. Hmm. I'll reserve judgement until Sunday I think

  • 2013 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From Coravin. Ooh, quite brambly, with bracken, five spice and earth. With time a little ream and red berry fruit, cedar. Wet, fleshy, slightly sour and sharp red and blackcurrant fruit. It's a little sharp and the tannins are controlled and reined in compared to the other vintages. Having said that it's still very pleasant

Flight 2 - Bracket two - White (5 Notes)

The 11-14 vintages were a lot closer in style though with some delineation. The 2002 a little old perhaps.

  • 2002 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From Coravin. Gooseberry, marzipan and green pea with honey, toast, slight butter and lime and an oxidised and maderised note. That oxidised note is more to the fore on the palate and the flavours a little subdued. It has some mid palate breadth and finishes with an almond meal, almost oaty, note. Puts me in mind of aged Hunter Semillon. Might be on it's uppers.

  • 2011 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From Coravin. Wild ferment, gooseberry, perhaps a little reductive (?), slight green apple, lemon curd and spice. Juicy with fresh gooseberry and slight green apples, touches of lemon, some mid-palate breadth and a little tannic burr. Nice.

  • 2012 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From Coravin. Rich, polished, slight toast, slightly herbaceous with touches of granny smith, grapefruit, fresh sweat and spice. Juicy and fleshy, again that sweaty note with green apple, slight butter and spice and a little mid palate burr. Perhaps a touch short? Very nice though.

  • 2013 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From Coravin. Polished though not as rich as the 12, spice, gooseberry, minty herbaceousness, very slight wild ferment and lime. With time it gets more sweaty and leesy. In the mouth the predominant flavour is gooseberry, it's quite sharply acidic but balanced, leesy and has some tannic burr. travels long. Pretty handy though youngish.

  • 2014 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From Coravin. Medium minus intensity, wild ferment, green apple and a slight herbaceous note, slight cream. Juicy, fleshy, fresh as well with some lovely controlled oak spice and some leesy mid palate breadth as well as a little peppery grip which all travel long. Yum.

Closing

What a lovely midweek treat! A little concern on the 2012 rouge so we'll see how it pulls up on the weekend.
