Another big Riesling tasting in February. Again, similar wines across all three (or is it four) of these tastings so I'll enjoy having a chuckle at the discrepancy in my notes.
Okay, I'm Riesling'ed out now. No more for at least a month. Phew. That's not to say I didn't enjoy this tasting though!
2016 Gunderloch Fritz's Riesling
Germany, Rheinhessen
Apple, slight sulphur spritz, slight custard apple. Juicy, very nice, zesty apple.

2017 Woods Crampton Riesling White Label
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
Slight peaches, mineral over citrus. More of the same on the palate. Juicy but with, perhaps, some residual sugar? Or the addition of tartaric is more restrained here. Long, tangy. Rather good for short term drinking.

2016 Hofgut Falkenstein Krettnacher Altenberg Riesling Spätlese trocken #7
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Muted apple and cream, juicy, tangy, quite sharp acidity - zingy in fact…

2016 Meyer-Fonné Riesling Reserve
France, Alsace
ripe apples, slight clay, very slight creams and lees. Tangy and a little pointy, some breadth and mid palate with front of mouth burr but the fruit is a little lost here. Hmm

2017 Rocky Gully Riesling
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Frankland River
herbaceous over cream and apple, a touch of wet earth as well. Juicy, tangy, slight spritz, fruit present but exceedingly diminished and it's a bit short.

2016 Clos Clare Riesling

2017 Stefano Lubiana Riesling

Lees and lime, floral perfumed top note. Zesty and juicy, citrus and a little front of mouth grip and breadth to the mid palate. Fruit drops a bit quickly though.

2016 Head Wines Riesling
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
crushed rock, lime and a little crystallised lemon and lime peel. Already showing that kerosene note and there is a touch of lees and a fair whack of skins dominating things on the palate….very forward. Nah

2016 Brackenwood Vineyard Riesling
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Cream, lime, a slightly meaty note, floral top notes. With time it gets a little bit too funky. Sour and unpleasant on the palate. Ugh

2015 Rippon Riesling Mature Vine
New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Lake Wanaka
Reductive lime cordial, slight struck flint. Sharply acidic - feels like tartaric addition though the climate shouldn't require it…Nope.

2012 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Hengst
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
rich, touches apricot, peach, custard and ripe apple. Dry but with a touch of residual sugar on the palate and similar flavours. It's broad as well as rich but, perhaps, just a little too soft.

2010 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Hengst
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Cream, apricot, peach, custard apple, quite rich. In the mouth it's off dry with botrytised notes married to green apple. Medium plus length and some mid and front of moot palate grip. Hmm.

2009 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Hengst
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Drier and cleaner than the 2012 and 2010. medium minus intensity aromas of apple juicy but the fruit is very muted on the palate though backed by a fair amount of sweet spice.

2007 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Hengst
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Honey, cream, slight apricot…juicy but, again, off dry, honey, apricot and finishes a little bitter with some grip on the mid palate. For the price I'd go German I think.

2017 Eden Road Riesling Canberra
Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District
apples and peaches, quite lozenge. Juicy, tangy, dry with a similar fruit profile to the nose. Easy and readily approachable…bit of a drink up

2017 Bannockburn Riesling
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong
Peachy but 'soft', slight plasticine and perfumed herb notes. Juicy but quite herbaceous on the palate as well. Hmm

2017 Meadowbank Estate Riesling
Australia, Tasmania, Southern Tasmania
Medium minus intensity aromas of wet stone, slate and citric over orchard fruits. Zesty acidity but with sufficient residual to offset this but it finishes a little short for me

2016 Reichsrat Von Buhl Forster Riesling Trocken
Germany, Pfalz
tinned peaches and pear with sulphur. There is slight spritz in the mouth and the fruit is a bit more astringent and hard. A touch disappointing

2017 Mount Edward Riesling
New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Green apple, crushed rock, slight sulphur. Juicy and dry but I think that palate fatigue is setting in - this is just a little meh for me.

2015 Sato Riesling
New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
herbaceous, slightly oxidised, lees stirring here and wild yeast, smells funky with more of the same on the palate but if feels like a failed experiment rather unfortunately.

2016 Rita & Rudolf Trossen Riesling Schieferblume
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
crushed rock, toasted herbs, wild ferment with similar elements on the palate married to a little sharp acidity…feels like a move towards Heymann Lowenstein though not quite there yet…interesting.

2014 Ansgar Clüsserath Trittenheimer Apotheke Riesling Kabinett
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
slight kerosene over custard apple with slaty spice. Off dry. Fruit sweetness is well integrated to the juicy acidity though it's a little short...this bottle might be a little forward, perhaps?

2016 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
wet slate, earth, apple and lemon. Slight sulphur and spritz on the palate with ripe apple though the acidity dominates the fruit, sharp, a bit out of whack at the moment and still a bit simple.

2016 Frogmore Creek Riesling

Lime over stone fruit, sulphur. Bone dry on the palate and sharp citrus dominates proceedings.

2017 Duke's Vineyard Riesling Single Vineyard
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Porongurup
Medium minus intensity aromas of non-delineated citrus - may be the temperature as it's been served quite cold. With time some lime and sulphur comes through. Juicy, bone dry with some mid palate grip…very linear, very front to back of the mouth

2017 Mount Horrocks Riesling Watervale
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale
Ahh, smells like an Aussie Riesling. Lime, lime pith and lime concentrate. And so it proves on the palate. Bone dry, sharply acidic, pointy lime juice. What's there is balanced but it needs half a millennia unless you're pouring it on freshly shucked oysters...

2017 Grosset Riesling Polish Hill Clare Valley
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Green apple more than citrus, mineral, floral top notes. Juicy, tangy, spicy, savoury minerals, fruit is a little muted against this but still holds it's own. Kind of nice

2015 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Turckheim Flawed
France, Alsace
There is a slight bonfire note here which is a little odd, also touches of botrytis and oxidation - the colour is a little too golden. I'm going to go with FLAW for this bottle.

2016 Frogmore Creek Riesling FGR
Australia, Tasmania
Medium minus intensity aromas of lime cordial, not much going on the nose and, in the mouth, even with the residual sugar, it's still sharply acidic…disappointing.

2017 Mount Horrocks Riesling Cordon Cut
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
half bottle. Concentrated crystallised lime and lime marmalade backed by touches of apricots. Juicy acidity isn't quite enough to stop this from being a little cloying. Hmm. Perhaps time will help this integrate better?

2016 Weingut Knoll Riesling Federspiel Loibner
Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Muted summer meadow, orchard fruit backed by citrus and touches of sulphur. Fleshy, juicy, spicy and that floral note translates to the palate with the pear over apple. Quite a rich mid palate. Nice.
