Wineflock - 1er Red Burgundy 1988-1998

Typical Flock event - everything served blind except welcome wines and all ranked top to bottom. Quite a bit of diversity of opinion in this group on these wines.

Bob was very generous to share a great champagne and a wonderful ancient treat at the front end, and a great older riesling on the back end.

For these wines, I was in the last pour position so some of mine had substantial sediment. Also, Bob has a cat and my allergies were flairing up pretty good...

  France, Champagne

  A lovely mature champagne made in the Pol Roger house style with plenty of toast and yeast. Drinking very well and still plenty of youth.

• 1906 Larronde & Freres Musigny

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

  Clear garnet burnt orange color. Forward musty spicy nose of freshly formed bricks and a medicinal/menthol note with some cognac-like heat. Nice round tertiary earth, dried leaves, and iron-rich mineral on the palate with a surprising amount of life and structure remaining. Primary fruit is mostly gone, but still quite interesting to taste. Has a definite hint of cognac-like fortification that may be coming through more noticeably at this advanced age.   Medium full red with pink edges. Medium bright red/black cherry with hints of spice. Full black fruit and spice - still tight and structured. Drinking young.

  Coudy crimson with substantial sediment in the glass. Tight red fruit nose with a bit of must. Subdued. Big bright acidic red fruit with some leaves and spice. A bit angular.

• 1995 Dominique Laurent Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts 85 Points

  Group #2, My #8 - Cloudy crimson with a mist of fine sediment in the glass. Big briar black fruit and spice. Pale red fruit iwth firm tannins and lots of acidity - not enough fruit to pull it together. Very surprised that this scored as highly as it did with the group.

  Group #7, My #5 - Full deep purple center with red edges. Medium tight red/black fruit with some brightness. Big tight red fruit wit hnice spiciness on the palate. Still young and somewhat tannic, but good pedigree here.

  Group #3, My #2 - Full red color with crimson edges. Full nose of tight black fruit - clean and mildly bright. Slight floral notes. Big mouthful of rich black fruit with earthiness and hints of sweetness and spice. Very NSG.

  Group #4, My #1 - clear pale red color with crimson at the edges. Big forward nose of candied strawberry and cherry. A completely different nose from the rest of the group with some nice sweetness to it. Mmmn, lovely ripe round red cherry and strawberry with good body, acidity, and nice balance.

  Group #1, My #4 - Full clean red/pink color. Dusty red and violet fruit on the nose with just a hint of socks. Full black fruit with a slight angular note and some spiciness. This was very nice, but drinking quite young.

  Group #8, My #3 - Full clear burgundy red color. full black/purple fruit on the nose with just a slight canned note - clean. Nice full black cherry with nice floral and spice notes. Good structure and definitely still a youth.

  Full red color. MEdium forward nose of candied black fruit. Big black spicy fruit with some heat - definitely stood out in this group as new world and alcoholic.

  Lovely bright yellow color (showing very little age). Nice bright light on its feet riesling. I guessed at least 10 years younger. Would be a great food wine with the acidity, but not sweet enough to be a dessert wine really.
