Introduction

In general the formula here is that the host sets a theme and every participant brings a wine of the theme. The host puts a few extra on the table. We taste all wines blind, knowing our own wines. We first taste a little bit in a random order. Then we decide together in which order the wines will be tasted again and after that revealed. In this group we do not use spittoons, so the number of bottles is limited. We don’t empty the bottles, but leave the leftovers for the host to taste again the next day, or take home the bottle we brought. In fact this easy setting where we taste the wines several times over 4 – 6 hours is the ultimate way to get a good impression of a wine.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2002 Château Gruaud Larose 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Like my previous note. This is a beautiful wine, but not living up to the expectations. Gruaud should do better. Even in an off vintage. Possibly it needs more ageing, but at the moment I am not sure about the wine’s potential.

  • 1998 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Little pleasant barnyard. Juicy cassis. Firm and good tannin. Complex. A complete wine. Although this wine is still quite youthful the tannin has melted somewhat and this wine shows itself much better than in 2007. If you like your wines young, this is the moment to start drinking this wine. In 2 years from now however, it might be even a greater pleasure to drink. My (blind) score was significantly higher than in 2007.

  • 2002 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Beautiful expressive bouquet with soft ripe fruits. Already a little developed. Soft black and red fruits. Refined. Little sweetness. Firm dose of acidity and bitterness. Much more developed than I expected from this domain. Same story about the complexity. It is complex alright, but not as complete as I expected. (Tasted blind, only knowing it was a GCC Bdx)

  • 1998 Château Léoville Poyferré 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Almost exactly the same TN as the one from October last year. Two new remarks: Just after opening there was a lot of butter in the bouquet. In October I thought it really needed an extra 5 years. Tasting this bottle I prefer to say 2 – 3 years of cellaring will do, but it certainly will be ok in 5 years as well.

  • 1999 Château Léoville Poyferré 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Beautiful and elegant bouquet; complex, good cassis. Medium to full bodied. A lot of cassis, some liquorice. Soft but firm tannin and good bitterness. Beautiful now when decanted a few hours before drinking. This wine will evolve for the next 3+ years.

Beautiful bouquet with smoke, vanilla, sweet spices and dark berries. On the palate ripe dark berries, licorice, good acidity and a firm amount of sweetness. Long and elegant finish.
