Introduction

A fun day here with grilled lamb and glazed spiral spliced ham as the centerpieces for dinner. We had a good mix of wines that satisfied the masses.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • NV Baron Albert Champagne L'Universelle Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne

    Light gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 45 minutes. First time trying this particular cuvee. There are similarities to the Brut Tradidtion. This has green apple, mineral, a foamy mousse; on the palate citrus with some grapefruit, a touch sour on the back end. This seemed to be more focused on the second glass with a good attack and a clean finish. This might be a tiche of a step up from the Tradition. 89+ to 90pts.

  • 2014 Wente Vineyards Chardonnay Single Vineyard Riva Ranch 88 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Arroyo Seco

    Light medium golden color. Small glass over 15 minutes. Poured this for my Aunt again who loved it. I found it more interesting now with some additional age on it. Golden delicious apple and pear notes, toffee, wood spice, hints of vanilla, medium body, quite drinkable. A nice quaffer.

  • 2005 Château La Tour de Mons 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Very dark red color. Decanted for 30 minutes, drank 2 glasses over 2 hours. This doesn't appear to have changed a great deal, and looks to be on a plateau. The palate is medium plus bodied but a bit leaner now, dark berry fruits, graphite, cassis, mineral and gravelly tannins, oak. The nose picks up some floral notes at times. Still good, but I don't see these getting better. Drink up.

  • 2006 Féraud-Brunel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Dark red color. Decanted for an hour, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. This was in a very nice spot. The nose offers some lovely red berry fruits, a nice malange of juicy strawberry, red raspberry and cherry forms a great base to the fruit which carries through to the palate, garrigue, scorched earth, pencil, and pepper infuse spices on a medium full bodied frame. This comes off balanced and very fresh with a nice purity and a traditinal vibe. This is a style I can go for. In a sweet spot with plenty of time left.

  • 2015 Markus Molitor Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett (Golden Capsule) 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Light gold color. Had this with our ham and it worked beautifully. This continues to evolve and shed some baby fat. Very nice tropcial fruits, pineapple, lychee, apple, light fusil, good mineral density, tart and not too much RS, good acid gives this some lift. Only going to improve from here. A total steal.
