Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2016 Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Théo 85 Points

    France, Alsace

    (non-blind - my wine)
    Pale straw color.
Elevated intensity nose of expressive ripe Meyer lemon. A suggestion of faint pool toy / TDN but not overt.
Feels lightly sweet - consistent with 5g RS. Has a bit of heat at 12.5% alcohol. High-minus acid. Clean finish, no phenolics.

The fruit character is really ripe lemon. Medium finish. Simple Alsace style.

  • 2016 Pewsey Vale Vineyard Eden Valley Riesling 87 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

    (non-blind - my wine)
    Pale straw color.
Moderately intense (muted for Riesling) nose of underripe lime, slight rubber - reduction.
On the palate, more pronounced shower curtain / TDN.
Dry - maybe 1-2g RS (actually 0.9g). 12% alcohol (correct), high acid (mix of malic and tartaric). Very nice Oz style. Limey finish - medium length.

  • 2012 Hugel Riesling Estate 82 Points

    France, Alsace

    (blind)
    Pale straw.
Strong reduction and notable TDN/petrol - shower curtain.
1g RS, 12.5% alcohol, high+ acid. Squeaky clean.

Guess: Based on the structure, cleanness, and TDN, Australian Riesling - Eden Valley, 2016.

    Actually 3.3g RS - 2012 hugel riesling

Analysis: This is a really austere, poor example of Alsace Riesling. I’d expect more ripeness, more complexity even from AOP.

  • 2016 Loosen Bros. Riesling Dr. L 86 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    (blind)
    Pale straw.
Slight reduction on the nose. Very cold, so hard to get any aromas.
20g RS, 7% alcohol, strong mineral impression - almost a bitterness, high acid. Notable petrol on the palate and underripe white peach and slight nectarines and blossoms (notable terpenes).

German. Mosel - has the lean fruit character, appropriate ripeness and alcohol, and high acid.
Final guess: 2016 Kabinett, very good quality though lower ripeness.

    8.5% alcohol
    Actually: dr loosen 2016 Riesling
I thought this was pretty good, if simple.

  • 2016 Felton Road Riesling Bannockburn 86 Points

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Bannockburn

    (blind)
Pale yellow. Reductive nose with slight petrol.
30g/l (actually 63g), 9% alcohol (actually 9.5%). Lean palate - shows a bit of development, but not a lot of fruit.

Based on the leanness, and RS and alcohol, this could be:
    - Spatlese - Mosel, 2013

Actual: 2016 felton road bannockburn riesling
Interesting - it's a more german style than Alsace, which is not what I mainly encountered in the Kumeu area. It seems the South Island tends sweeter/German and the north island is more dry / Alsace?

  • 2009 Rippon Riesling Flawed

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Lake Wanaka

    (blind)
Medium yellow - hint of gold.
Oxidized - bruised yellow apple, apple sauce. Notable pool toy TDN on the palate.
    10g RS (18g/L), 11% (actually 12%) alcohol.
    -

    - Alsace - alcohol is too low
    - German Auslese trocken - a bit of a strange style. Too dry.
    - German Spatlese - alcohol is a bit high, sugar is too low

    Final call:

    German Auslese Trocken, 2004.

Guess: 15 yr old kabinett- mosel or rheingau.

Actual: 2009 Rippon Riesling central otago. $18
This is consistent with sweeter South Island styles, but this bottle is far too advanced for its age.

  • 2016 Domaine Weinbach Riesling Réserve Personnelle 87 Points

    France, Alsace

    (non-blind - my wine)

    Pale straw.
White peach and ripe lemon nose - showing a bit of development - maybe oak barrels? Weird hint of white pepper.
Reduction, and a bit of bitterness on the palate. Also medium plus acid.
    4g RS, 13% alcohol.

    4.67g
    12.75%

This is a pretty lean style for Alsace - not a lot going on here. A bit simple given the price.

  • 2016 Pewsey Vale Vineyard Eden Valley Riesling 87 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

    (blind)
    Pale yellow.
Slight struck match - noble reduction. Also slight rubber/plastic reduction.
bone dry (actually 0.9g), 12% alcohol (correct), austere.
This seems like textbook Eden Valley Riesling 2016
Correct! It's the same wine I brought - good to see the second bottle tastes about the same.
